Most Underappreciated Characters Thread

PostPosted: Fri Jun 01, 2007 12:48 pm
by mitsuki lover
This is a thread for all those anime characters that aren't as appreciated as they ought to be.For example Anzu(aka Tea)on Yu-Gi-Oh!doesn't get the
appreciation she deserves even though she has been a pivotal member of the original Yugi Gang since day one.
Yes,her Rah!rah! attitude may drive some people crazy when they watch, but without her rooting them on there would be times when Yugi,Joey and the others would be as encouraged to go on with their duals.

So what characters do you all think are underappreciated and why?

Trowa Barton from Gundam Wing, hands down.

Hm...maybe Toto from the Cat Returns. He doesn't really have a gigantic role, but he helps out more than once. To me, he is one of my favorite characters. In terms of intelligence, he has the upper hand--er, wing--against Muta. Besides, ravens rock.

My brother thinks that Muta is an underappreciated character as well. "Too? I'm an afterthought??"

Cheese from Sonic X is probably also underappreciated. I mean, Sonic and a good chunk of the others are in the spotlight, but what about Cheese? Just because he doesn't speak English (or whatever language you're watching it in) doesn't mean he's a lightweight or anything.
Just look at what he did to Emerl in the later part of the first series...woo-wee!
Turnip-head from Howl's Moving Castle.

lol, you said it ;)

I would venture to say Nemu from Haibane Renmei. I don't know if fans give her much credit, but she was such a comfort and help to Reki, after all.

Too many characters to name, really. I notice a common trend of passing over or forgetting certain characters who lack sex appeal in favor of more good looking or eye-pleasing protagonists and antagonists.

Bruce Campbell in Spiderman.
He should've played Peter Parker.

..
..

Oh, you mean in anime?

Scar in FMA.

Reno and Demyx!!!!!!!! And maybe Ken-oki... poor sweet slightly evil cabbit doesn't have as much popularity as his fuzzy brown Ryo-oki counterpart.

...... Was Bruce Campbell the guy that plays J. Jonah? Cause if so I totally agree.

Reno and Demyx underappreciated? Have you been to a con lately?

I feel like the Noah twins from DGM don't get nearly as much love as the Rhode, Tiki, or the Exorcists. =[ Also, the Asia Branch is very slighted in love, which makes me sad. I like them a whole lot.

hmm I will say Winry from FMA...O_o she just didn't get enough air time or depth in the Anime...In MY opinion...>_> she just seemed to be a character that always fixed Edward's foot...

Rose was kinda like that too...just around in the later part of the series...how did she get that baby? Why was she suddenly considered so holy? are these questions answered in the Manga, because I was really confused!!!

T__T Meh. Still unerappreciated. RENO MUST RUN FOR PRESIDENT!

How about the RudexTifa pairing? Now THAT'S underappreciated.

On that note my pick is Manzou the Saw from Samurai Champloo. He is the detective the makes cameos throughout the series, he also narrates the series.

I agree with the J. Jonah nomination, but that isn't Bruce Campbell. Check out the Spiderman 3 thread...it's like a Bruce Campbell shrine now.

Turnip head was better in the book. >.>;; I thought Miyazaki butchered his epic part. But ah well.

O.o So who the heck WAS Bruce Campbell? I know he's not any of the 3 leading guys (Peter - Toby McGuire, Harry - Franco Somethingorother, Eddy - Topher Grace). Was he Pete's landlord? Cause if so I would nominate that dude too. He was great with his words of wisdom in both movies.

Demyx is underappreciated? He's a hack at his job, saved only in passing by the fact that rampant fangirls find him charming and attractive for some reason. Should be grateful he gets any attention whatsoever.

I think Akane on Dual might be underrated a bit. She's the liasion between the
EDF and the UN and has the thankless job of keeping Commander Sanada in line.

Bruce Campbell has a cameo in all 3 movies:

1) Wrestling match announcer.
2) Usher for MJ's play.
3) "french" waiter.

Raimi seems to use him in many of his movies since Evil Dead 2. He is a cult hit and has an interesting fan base.

Here is the part of the Spidey thread with him in it:http://www.christiananime.net/showthread.php?t=41967&page=3&pp=40

I think this is off the topic really. On the other hand the reason why Raimi uses Campbell in a lot of his movies is because they were best buds growing up in
Detroit.I read it in a Starlog interview of Raimi's younger brother Ted once.
According to Ted they used to pick on him a lot!

:eyeroll: Because having thousands of screaming fangirls and hundreds of people cosplaying the character entirely means they are underappreciated.

Now that's true.

Also:
Ed and Ein from Cowboy Bebop
Kaorin from Azumanga Daioh
Mesousa from Pani Poni Dash
No-Face from Spirited Away
Kodama from Mononoke Hime

Lt. Riza Hawkeye from the Full Metal Alchemist anime. She doesn't get enough air-time if you ask me.

Luis from Blood+. He's a great character, who unfortunately largely falls into the background of any given episode. Also, this may just be because the American dub hasn't gotten this far yet, but the Schif seems under-appreciated to me. Although that may just be because I am largely out of touch with the fanbase.

Kokoro Daisuke wrote::eyeroll: Because having thousands of screaming fangirls....

If that is what it means to be under-appreciated, then I want to be under-appreciated.

Relena from Gundam Wing. Yes, she was very immature and bratty at the start of the series, but as time progresses she learns and realizes her mistakes and wrong opinions (most of 'em anyway).

All the characters from Scryed? That whole series is under appreciated...

Random Soldier #2351

But not as underappreciated as Random Villager #4568. Man, he was such a deep and cool character! :P

Havoc, Breda, Fuery, and Fallman from Fullmetal Alchemist. Riza gets more appearances than they do! And I love 'em!

lol, he was offered Norman Osborn. He would have been so good. Oh so good. I almost cried when he rejected the part.

Most Underappreciated Character....
hmmm, off the top of my head:
Moran from Last Exile.

Haha, funny you mention Moran. He was my favorite character in the whole series! ^_^;

Takemoto-kuuun from Hachikuro. Definitely overshadowed by everyone else. ;3;

Also the MOST underappreciated character from Hellsing (do I have to say it?)

ALEXANDER ANDERSON!!

Can I get an Amen?

Izzy from "Digimon: Digital Monsters"--mostly season one. They used him like a walking, talking, green-sock-wearin' PokeDex!

Doctor Julia Silverstein from Blood+

She needs more screen time or I think she does. It would make me very happy.
