Turner Classic Movies to start Miyazi festival on Jan 5!

Postby rocklobster » Wed Dec 28, 2005 10:09 am

According to the latest Anime Insider, starting Jan 5, we get to see two Miyazaki movies every Thursday night. Here's what's on tap for the entire festival:
  1. Jan 5: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke
  2. Jan 12: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky
  3. Jan 19: My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Russo, Whisper of the Heart
  4. Jan 26: Only Yesterday, Pom Poko

Of those movies, only My Neighbor Totoro, Only Yesterday, and Whisper of the Heart are currently unavailable from Disney on DVD.
Just thought I'd pass this along.

But I own My Neighbor Totoro on DVD...?

I didn;t think Spirited away would be old enough to be on TCM. I think we have TCM, I'll definitly be watching this.

Age is not neccessarily a factor in whether or not something is a classic.

Besides, TCM has edged toward newer fare recently, I think.

I rented it on DVD a while ago. It's available.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

The version of Totoro in the US is a different company. I think Disney needs to wait for the expiration of their rights before their release can be sold in the US

They're saying some of these will be rebroadcast on Cartoon Network. I doubt Princess Mononke will be one of them. It's too dark for the Toonami target audience, yet still too childish for Adult Swim.

Mononoke would fit Adult Swim just fine. I don't see why it wouldn't... Now, most of the others would NOT fit Toonami because they aren't action... Totoro would never fit Toonami... They may just be shown as "animated movies" instead, not as part of teh Toonami lineup.

As for Mononoke on toonami, if they could chop that do-not-discuss anime up enough to get it on Toonami, Mononoke would be a cinch.

Also, could someone PM me and tell me why Mononoke is on the do not discuss list?

mononoke isn't do not discuss, the show they had on toonami of which I am referring is on the do not discuss... Read the list, you'll figure it out. I'll give you a hint... They showed it during "Giant Robot Week"

Anyhow...

This is good news for those who get TCM.

I, unfortunately, am not one of those.

So, those who can, enjoy it a little extra for me, eh?

I am still somewhat surprised that Disney has not been showing any of the titles on their channel since they do in fact own the distribution rights to them. The only one they continue to air is Kiki's Delivery Service.

Studio Ghibli did 'Grave of the Fireflies' but not Miyazaki. I'm looking forward to this, hopefully I can find something with which to record those I don't have.

TCM has got to be one of my favorite channels. I love old movies, and I think it's great that they're showing Miyazaki's films.

I'll be watching Whisper of the Heart, Porco Russo, Pom Poko, and Only Yesterday (since I own/planning on owning the others). I wanna try these ones out (minus OY, since it's not licensed yet), cause it's basically like free-viewing rather than blindly buying/renting them ^^ Good thing too, since the local area JUST got a channel change and TCM was one of the stations that was randomly added on^^ Perfect timing! Bad timing is the fact that I'll be waiting till like, 4:30 in the morning to watch some of these in their subbed versions >_< Oy... Well, I guess I could always tape some of it if I start falling asleep :/ *not good when it comes to LATE late nights :/)

No.

Grave of the Fireflies is a Studio Ghibli movie, but not a Miyazaki movie.

My TV listings say about Princess Mononoke: "Voices of Gillian Anderson." I doubt she'd be in Japanese.

The first showings of each evening will be dubbed. The second showings of each title will be in Japanese with English subtitles. This will be true for each title except Only Yesterday which has not been dubbed and both showings of it will be in Japanese.

Note to Canadian viewers:
ANN stated that the site does list the shows for the 5th. So we're only missing Mononoke and Spirited Away (tis ok for me since I own both^^) Luckily, the 19th and 26th shows will still be aired^^ *whew*
