Anime "Bashing" in anime

Postby illuminousX51 » Sun May 22, 2005 10:36 am

There are a lot of shows out there that enjoy making fun of themselves. Usually this is intentional to get laughs or to make a point about the anime industry. In Nadesico for example, the inside-show, Gekiganger III, is probably one of the more funnier examples. The dialogue is corny, characters yell out their powers, and the battles involve mecha that look pretty cheesy - A great spoof on the anime titles of the 80's (even the main character is laughed at for enjoying such corny material). Excel Saga is another show that I felt had some great spoofs, though they were pretty crazy at times.

What other shows do you guys know of that pokes fun of it's own industry?

A few come to mind.

Project A-Ko is one of the earlier titles that did this. Otaku No Video is presented as a documentary of Otakudom but spends most of it's time poking fun.

Comic Party is a twist in that it takes the manga industry on taking jabs at a number of well known manga titles and in a couple cases some anime.

And while I definately would not recommend these because of content, Cosplay Complex and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi would fall in this catagory.

Scrapped Princess has a few jabs at the industry as well. Like when Pacifica stares blankly for several minutes at absolutely NOTHING, and then makes some comment about it. Also (mild spoiler):
At the end of the last episode, Pacifica appears unconscious to her brother, Shannon, completely naked--she wakes up and screams "hentai, hentai!" (pervert, pervert!) and grabs his cloak. He says she's the one that appeared out of nowhere without any of her clothes.
Let's see
Sailor Moon has an episode where they make fun of the anime industry and their cliches

Fushigi Yuugi makes several references to the censors forbidding some elements from the manga.

Excel Saga does an episode making fun of the American obsession with anime

Urusei Yatsura does frequent caricatures of the staff

<snipped by mith: Sorry man, I can't let that one stand.>

Love Hina anime makes fun of manga author Ken Akamatsu

Otaku no Video makes fun of Otaku and does a "This is Spinal Tap" style history of Gainax in episode 2

Mahoromatic has a couple of pre-season trailers that make it seem that studio Gainax are a bunch of perverts who changed the real story

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi makes fun of Geekdom in general but
especially Sasshi's own Geekdom!
Mune-mune is a stab at parodying fan service.
In Digimon Tamers one of the characters mockingly calls Takato
"Yolei" from the name of one of the girls from the previous season.
(In Tamers the previous Digimon seasons were an anime just like in the
Real World.)
The North American dub of Duel Masters has a whole lot of dialogue
poking fun at everything and anything.

FLCL has a line in it that goes something like "Where'd you get that idea, anime?" (something like that, haven't watched it in a while.) It also has a reference to Castle of Cagliostro, regarding a green jacket, IIRC.
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.

Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu makes fun of the RPG industry in the first episode.

And in episode 4 of Fruits Basket, Shigure puts an angry sign on his head. XD I guess...that kind of makes fun of it, lol.

Matantei Loki Ragnarok, I think, portrays and pokes fun at the "fangirl" sub-culture. For example, Loki visits Mayura's high school and gets glomp-tackled by a herd of squealing girls.

They also make several jabs at cosplay and Iron Chef, and in one episode Heimdall attempts to "scare" a girl with his stunning impersonation of Sadako from the Ring. xD; Thought I don't think those are 100% anime related.

Oh...and we can't forget Excel Saga, where Ilpalazzo orders Excel to assassinate Kouji Rikudo because he believes manga artists are the source of society's corruption. Ironically when Ilpalazzo shows Excel an example of unacceptable manga, he holds up a set of the Excel Saga books.

In FLCL, there is alot of stuff that they make fun of about anime.

In the second episode, Naota tells Haruko that the reason his dad acts so strange is because "He wrote an 'EVA' book a while ago". (in the English version, "He wrote a book on the deep mysteries of 'EVA.'").

I forget the quote that was said, but they made fun of manga of FLCL in the anime.

Yakitate!! Japan, pokes at the creators of the show/manga about how even they could make Suihan-japan (rice-cooker bread). In the manga there's also a parody show/manga "Takitate!! Gohan" about making rice instead of bread.
