Does anyone still like Sailor Moon?

Postby SangoKilala » Wed Sep 17, 2003 4:28 pm

Ok, I know Sailor Moon is a little...well, weird...but to me, the series gets better later on, they focus on better things then being complete idiots, I kind of liked how the series went, they were all good, normal young teens, not doing anything wrong really, I liked the show, and I'm wondering if anyone still likes it!

My baby sister (this term is used loosely, she's 24) adores it. I keep telling her to sign up here, but at least I know what to get her for Christmas!

that show is what got me started in anime. It's still one of my favorites even if they act a little dumb now and then. :) so put me down as a fan of the show. :thumb: Also i love the name, those are two of my favorite characters in Inuyasha.

Reinitiated fan here... Subs only, I won't ever watch DiC dubs and Cloverway is approaching that (considering the names and opening/ending themes are still changed)

I am going to get the first two seasons on DVD as soon as I get some things that I need... SO, it will be a while but I'm going to get them.

I used to be one of the biggest freaking Sailor Moon fans in the whole state of Oklahoma (okay, that's just an assumption but you get my drift). But...eh...not anymore. I felt that it was something I needed to give up, so, slowly but surely, I did.

The DiC dub was awful. I mean, once I saw the subbed movies I was like..."how did I ever sit through that dub??"

The movies were cute (esp. the one that focused mainly on Luna ^^; heh) but I got rid of them along with all the other paraphernalia I had.

Like Shiroi ^^ I also used to be a huge SM freak. Not too much anymore, but I still really really do love it still ^^ It's one of the best, it's so funny. It's just like fun-loving and the moral behind the story is worth.

If you have ever seen the Japanese version of the show I'm sure you wouldn't like it almost at all!!!!! I've seen it and half the time Sailor Moon is half ,if not completely, naked while she is fighting as are the other scouts to a lesser extend! It was actualy made for men/boys in japan but america ,of course, edited the heck out of it.

When I'd first heard of it and before I really started watching the show (I've only seen the dubbed version), I thought of it as "mildly amusing".

Now I think of it as "hilarious" and with me it ranks a close third next to Hamtaro and The Bush Baby.

Still, I'd like to see an entire episode in which the characters are just themselves and not having to switch into their sailor (and tuxedo) uniforms. (Maybe that would make a good fanfic. ^_~ )

Please don't make comments like this. Some people do really like the show and if you don't, you need to provide a better reason than "it's really stupid". All that does is hurt people's feelings.

Man I can't help but still like Sailor Moon after all these years. I have fond memories of watching it still when I was smaller and didn't even know what anime was. I was kinda happy too when I finally heard that they were gonna release it uncut but I shyed away when I heard about the Two Sailors and there umm...Alternative Lifestyle. But Bob the duck cleared that up for me a little so maybe I'll pick up one of the uncut dvd's so I can see it the way it was ment to be seen and without the Ear-Sratching Dub.

I can't believe how incredibly wrong you are... Very ignorant statement, you probably read that on a watchdog report somewhere. Plust, you say you've seen it? Well, what have you seen? You don know that
Sailormoon and the 7 Ballz
was a fan movie and not made by the people who made the real SM, right? This is one of the most rediculous statements I've read on here in a long time... Allthough there is Anatomically incorrect nudity (aka "Barbie Doll") in the last episode, for like a quarter of the ep, that is a very small part of a very long and mostly clean show.

By last ep, I mean episode 200, in "Sailor Stars" a show which was made for an older audience (though still made for girls only) than the other four (though some would argue that S has more mature things in it than Stars...)

I think the transition of roles for Usagi from annoyed older sister figure(even if that wasn't reality) with Chibi Usa to Maternal Figure for Chibi Chibi in Stars is the character development that many fans were starving for, though there is development in the show before that.

Actually, her maturing hapened in the SuperS movie which takes place just before the beginning of Stars. Anyhow, it's not as stupid and pointless as some people think. There is Character development and serious messages (for some reason, I can't seem to spell that word right no matter what I try...) and while the "monster of the day" is a very shallow format, it manages to go deeper than that and has about 50 episodes worth (once you cut out the fluff) of good story.

Sailor Moon is one of the first animes I got into, back when it started airing on CN. I was really into it back then. Since then, I really haven't given it much thought. It is an important series to the growth of anime in the US, in my opinion, but in and of itself it is not on my list of favorites.

I too, was welcomed into Animeland by way of the Sailor Scouts. My best friend and I used to be ridiculously huge fans in late elementary/middle school. By mid high school however, we were a bit more sophisticated in the fandom of Japanimation, so our obsession with Sailormoon waned to nothing more than a fond memory.

I still think of the show as pretty cute, even the dubbed version, but I think the basic premise of the show would have alot more respect among "harcore" otaku if they kept Serena/Usagi's personality closer to the one in the manga, and ditched that stupid Power-Rangery plotline they had nearly every episode.

and while the "monster of the day" is a very shallow format, it manages to go deeper than that and has about 50 episodes worth (once you cut out the fluff) of good story.

Sailormoon should have just been an OAV, if you ask me!

I've seen the movies and a few SuperS episodes in their original form, but I didn't find them as being far higher quality than the American version, as some people might insist. The music was actually alot more annoying -- especially the corny disco music they played when the inner scouts were transforming. "Sailormoon...doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo Sailormoon...doooo-ooo-ooo-ooo....Sailormoon!" :stressed:

Poor inner scouts...they got screwed. the outer scouts got everything; cooler powers, cooler personalities, cooler theme music....

I stick to the Sailormoon manga. It's really romantic, poetic, and epic -- that's how I would like to imagine a story like this. *^^*

The manga was cool, for the most part. It was um...not quite as sugary as the anime. But, still, I don't watch/read SM anymore.

I used to like it alot. I think it might have been one of my fav anime at one time. Now I've veered off into other anime that I like better, so I'm not into it any more. Sorta like with ShiroiHikari.

I used to like it when I was younger, it brought me into anime. I stopped watching it when they started calling Serena/usagi the messiah though and started playing off the holy grail. I always hated the first series, but as it went on it got better . I haven't ever seen superS or Stars, though. Oh well.

...as well as being unavailable in it's true form in the US...

That's the only reason I don't read the mixx manga. Once My grasp of Japanese gets better (and I learn some basic Kanji) I'll probably see if I can find it in Japanese, as well as "Sailor V" which I have read some of in a Fan Translation.

Mixx, however, was almost as bad as DiC. Not only did they use DiC's naming conventions, but they changed the names of the outers of their own accord even before cloverway came along, so they weren't doing it "purely for the fans of the dub" so that they wouldn't have to deal with new names, but they were proactive in removing things from the original... Also, many plot and major dialogue changes occurred in the Mixx manga as well... So, I won't touch it.

however, I am glad they kept Zoicite a male (because he's not gay in the manga anyhow, so they didn't have to worry) and kept many things closer to the original than what DiC/Cloverway did, but for what they messed up, I don't want to bother with it.

In any case, it's true I have gotten into many anime since then, and it's not "genius" or anything, but it just brings back good memories...

I'm definitely a huge sm fan ^o^ Sailor Moon is what got me on the internet, it provided me free reading material, then it got me drawing fan art when I hadn't drawn for awhile, then it got me to create a website based on it, and got me into writing. It pretty much skyrocketed me to where I am now.. ^____^

I can't say that I watch it much anymore (I've seem pretty much all the episoides except for the S season which I read summaries of online). I have the subbed for the stars season which I'm fond of.

Sure, most of the "standard" enemies are pretty corny, but I still love the story and the characters. It's a classic in my heart, and I'm still an avid fanfiction writer for it (even though I majorly write in alternate reality).

So yeah--whe're out here. ^__^ Just go to places like moonromance.net or ariasink.com and you'll find more sm fans than you know what to do with. =D

Oh, I forgot to mention... transformation music aside (I generally skip the transformations/long drawn out attacks), the rest of the music was of a higher quality in the Japanese version in my opinion, because it fit where it came from, wheras DiC tried to convince everyone that it all takes place in Heartland City USA. And the dialogue was better, the characters were deeper (particularly Rei in the first season... One of DiC's worst changes is the ep where Sailormoon "surrenders" and what they did to Rei made her look so much more petty and shallow, when she's actually very Loyal and protective...)

DiC Changed the story a lot, and Cloverway did a little, and they really dumbed it down, though as I've said Cloverway wasn't quite as bad... However, the names/songs that DiC set up had to continue on to cloverway's production... So, yeah...

Back on the music, the songs that people actually liked in the Dub weren't original. Most of them were pop songs in the US that got rerecorded by different singers. At least 2 of them (the opening and Rei's song in R) took the music from original Japanese counterparts but changed the lyrics and intentions of the songs drastically (the opening, for instance, never even mentioned the title in the Japanese version... It was a song that could have been on the radio)

DiC liked the basic story but were afraid the viewers wouldn't have accepted the Japanese culture in it, so they made it as American as possible. Also, they were of the old American school of animation, in that death was something that just wasn't talked about. They weren't about getting a good story to fans, they were about capatalizing on a foreign cash cow and covering their butts in the mean time. (but it's funny what they still let slip by, just ask the "talented" Jupiter)

Sailor Moon would be the first anime I watched - it was summertime, I was 15 and bored out of my skull. Hence channel surfing! I happened upon Cartoon Network's Toonami: the artwork is what initially drew me in. Ever since I have loved anime though haven't watched a lot of it. (Plus, Tuxedo Mask/Darien was my first anime crush, hehehe. :red: )

My tastes have changed: I only watch subbed and uncut anime now. I am considering getting the unedited DVDs of Sailor Moon because I hear the Japanese version has a lot more meat. Besides, it was made for teenagers, not six-year-olds. ;)

Man... I hope that the Manga is retranslated more accurately with the correct names... But Mixx probably won't do that because 1. It will cost too much. 2. There aren't that many SM fans anymore. 3. The ones that are out there reading the manga are the dubbie fans or at least the Mixx manga fans and won't adjust well to the returning to it's original... It's like I've heard golfers say (I'm not a golfer) if you have a bad swing that gets you par, it's probably not wise to switch to a good swing when you go to a tournament... Well, it wasn't those exact words, but it was so stinking long ago, I don't remember exactly...

Hmm... season 1-2 was made for 7-12 year olds. (girls, though)
seasons 3-4 were made for preteens (again, Girls)
Stars was made for teens. (and yet, still girls)

I'm none of those things (I'm 21 and male) and yet I'll still be buying the DVD's of the first 2 seasons... I hope that stars gets released here... But not dubbed, or if it is dubbed, I hope they finally release a dub with all the right names, and don't make Luna sound like angela langsbury... She's supposed to sound like a young woman, dangit! That's probably not likely, so I hope to see a subtitled release...

I LOVE Sailor Moon!!! I have all the TV show episodes and movies, including the episode ADV skipped in the Sailor Moon R box set and the stars episodes. I think it's one of the best anime series ever! It's definitly among my top 10 animes. I think the last 6 episodes of Stars are possible the BEST ending for any anime!! The show has awesome background music (plays the Starlights transformation theme) and totally awesome songs. Last year I became obsessed with "Shooting Star" (That song the starlights always sing) and ended up singing it at my school's talent show. I tied for first place ^_^. My favorite seasons are Stars and S, and my favorite movie is the R movie. I alos love the manga series!

I am going to get the first two seasons on DVD as soon as I get some things that I need... SO, it will be a while but I'm going to get them.

You know that ADV (and Pioneer/Geneon as well, I believe) had their licenses for Sailor Moon expire right? All that's left of the Sailor Moon season 1 and 2 DVDs is the stuff thats still in stock at all the stores. Once it all sells out you'll probably have to pick up the DVDs on ebay or something. You might want to pick them up soon, before they all run out. I think most sights are selling them for dirt cheap. Right stuf has them on sale just about every week for like 39.99. but then again, you could be planning to buy the region 2 DVD, in wihc case this wouldn't matter
