The film will not make use of any CGI animation which Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Tales of the Earthsea relied upon heavily. Instead, this film will be completely hand drawn in water-colors.
Blitzkrieg1701 wrote:For now it's only in Japan. The SciFi Channel has exclusive film rights to Tales of Earthsea in America for at least another year or so.

Miyazaki on TCM was Only Yesterday because it was completely subtitled.
Roy Mustang wrote:The only reason why Only Yesterday was showed in subtitled only is, because there is no dub for it. Pixar/Disney has it shelved and so far no plans on releasing a dvd of the anime to the USA.
Canada is the only place in North America that you can get the English-subtitled DVD.

Or do you mean it was graphic for a Ghibli movie?
Alexander wrote:And isn't it confusing too? If they wouldn't translate it here just because of the girls discussing periods, then how on Earth did Princess Mononoke get published by them here, which had extremely graphic scenes of violence?

Blitzkrieg1701 wrote:I don't think Only Yesterday's lack of availability has anything to do with being from a female perspective. It's just a VERY kind of film from most Ghibli offerings. While I think it's well done for the near-Lifetime movie it is, I can see why The Powers That Be would think it wouldn't interest much of the Western anime audience. It's not exactly the fastest moving story ever animated.
As for Ponyo, who wrote it? Is it Miyazaki's own story, or is this adapted from another source like Howl's Moving Castle?
Alexander wrote:Ponyo is his own story. From what I've heard, it's based partially upon his relationship with Goro when he was five years old. Which makes me even more excited because while Ghibli has made some incredible films being based on books or manga, I always love it best when they work on their own ideas.

I'd imagine Whisper of the Heart made a DVD release because of its connection to The Cat Returns, plus the animation is still pretty flashy in places. Aside from one or two daydream moments (and maybe the ending), Only Yesterday could easily have been done as a live action movie. Not only does is LOOK more realistic than just about any other Ghibli film (save Grave of the Fireflies), but the story is way more slice-of-life and reflective. I mean, Whisper of the Heart may not be a wild fantasy, but it's shojo story is still a very different beast from Only Yesterday.
It's too bad that the higher-ups seem to be viewing this as a problem, though. One of the anime industry's biggest problems right now is that too many people are sticking to what's been done often before. I think Only Yesterday is a perfect example of how the animation medium can be stretched to different kinds of films. Oh well...
Alexander wrote:Or Ghibli in general. They're famous for doing things differently then not only Anime, but animation in general. Can you even compare another animated film to Grave of the Fireflies?
