is Fushigi Yugi any good?

Postby rocklobster » Tue Apr 25, 2006 2:03 pm

I just saw that the manga version has wrapped up, so I was wondering if the anime was good. I hear it's kind of like Inuyasha.

They belong to the same subgenre of anime but are totally different once you get into them. From the little I know about Fushigi Yugi it's really great. :thumb:

I have watched the entire anime series.

The first 26 episodes are captivating and imaginative. They have good character development and an interesting plot. Story lines are OK and fairly (though not completely) clean.

I got the feeling halfway into the last 26 episodes that the author (Yu Watase) was just trying to stretch the story to 52 total eps. Less captivating, less imaginative, full of unrealized potential. Definitely disturbing material here. Some good and moving scenes, but compared to the first season, disappointing.

Overall, a fair series, but for the length definitely not "bang for the buck".

It's a great series. It's like Inuyasha except with actual plot, good character development, and characters with more than three attacks. Oh, and nowhere near as boring.

I have to disagree slightly with ClosetOtaku. The first ten episodes or so of Fushigi Yugi are actually kinda boring, but if you can endure them you are in for quite a treat. The later episodes are chock-full of story goodness.

However, if you're offended by sexual content, you might want to avoid this series. There is a gay character, first of all (though he is constantly made fun of by the others). Second, there is some nudity, but it is Barbie-dollish and most of it is non-sexual. The worst, though, is the second part of the series,
The plot revolves around the qualifications to be a priestess (be a virgin) and the bad guys' attempts to try and remove that qualification. There is also a character named Soi who is a master of changing the level of a person's chi through the process of sex. She tries to use this on one of the good guys, but is stopped before anything happens.
It stands as my favorite anime of all time, so you should definitely check it out.

I am currently watching this series and agree that is better than Inuyasha plot-wise, but that it does deal with more 'mature' situations. It also has many similarities to 12 kingdoms (although I'm hoping a flawed story arc isn't one of them) ;)

Fushigi Yugi is awesome!!! My favorite part of the series was the first two OVA series that followed the TV show. Eikoden sucked though ><

I'd have to say it's in my top five favorite series, mainly because I developed such strong opinions of the characters. There were very few characters that I didn't have an opinion about one way or another, and I absolutely adored a few of them. Like kae said, some of the content might be objectable, but overall it's an absolutely awesome anime. :D Just be warned that the beginning IS a little slow.

*edited for typos, hope KAE IS HAPPY* ;)

I like this series, but it really does earn it's rating. I see good info here, so I don't feel the need to submit a full review.

Definitely a very enjoyable series, especially if you like fantasy and shoujo. But do take the objectionable content to heart: I've never watched an anime that revolves around sex and rape as a plot device and a tool of the villains as much as this series does. Thankfully, pre-marital sex is looked down upon for the most part in this series, but it definitely has some issues for any Christian viewer.

Approach with caution.

I'm currently watching it, and so far it seems pretty cool ^^ yeah, there are some things that the series could have done without though. I'm on episode 19 right now, so I'm not that far still. Tamahome was my favorite character at the beginning and I hated Hotohori, but now Hotohori is one of my favorites and Tamahome is kinda being pushed back hehe. Hotohori is just so funny because he takes serious situations and then suddenly makes a remark about how lovely his face is, priceless!

Though youths grow weary and tired
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
Yet those who wait for the LORD
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.

I honestly thought it was pretty horrible. Fun to watch and amusing but I honestly don't think it lives up to the hype at all.

In vol.17 of the manga she tells about how varoius characters got candy for the
1996 Valentine's Day.The list goes:
Tasuki(76 items),Nuriko(62 items),Chichiri(56 items),Taka(41 items),Chiriko(32
items),Hotohori(30 items),Mitsukake(25 items),Watase(18 items),Ambiboshi(14
items),Suboshi(7 items),Nakago(6 items),Miaka(5 items)
My poor Yui,she was left candiless!

That's only because you didn't know her address at the time, I'm sure. XD

I'm currently reading FY, and I'm glad I waited this long to do so. I'm a lot older than when I first got into anime, so I think that helps quite a bit...but hearing what's coming, well, that helped a lot, too. But I do quite enjoy it; Tamahome used to irritate me, and then Hotohori did, and then Chichiri did...but now I love all the guys. Even stupid Nariko...*sniff*...I can't hate them anymore.

Probably a redundant question, but how well does the anime follow the manga?

What I rather hate are the people who say that Inuyasha and Fushigi Yugi are the same thing. The last time I checked Kagome didn't have any of her friends from school either travelling with her in the Feudal Era or end up being conned by Naraku that Kagome had betrayed her and turning, temporarily,to the Dark Side.

In fact, Kagome never does anything evil, at least not yet!
