This is a great site. But it needs more than just a forum. Maybe to start out an image gallery and fan fiction area... I dunno just a suggestion

While others are in better positions to answer this question, I will nonetheless speak in vague terms on behalf of CAA.
I think our original intention has always been to be a Christian anime forum, and we will probably not swerve too far from that. However, you do have a few things to make you happy:
1) Chat room- though there's rarely anyone there*
2) Oekaki- that's your artwork for you
3) Writing forum- it's where fanfiction would go
Those can be found in the links in the upper right hand corner, and the Writing forum is with all the rest on the main page.
*if you're desperate, I'll chat with you.

I think the reason nobody usually likes to chat is because it's so much easier to use an IM service XD
seriously.

The weird thing is that I made quite a bit of progress with the gallery, then kinda ditched it for a couple of weeks

If we have our own server one day (root access), we can set up some IRC... that'll be quite a while yet though...

This is probably a dumb question, but how much does a server cost? (one of the type we would need for CAA, that is)

Lots of money.. like $80/month minimum. That would support around 100 registered people online at a time though. I think we'll be needing one eventually, once we start to peak at about 40 registered users online at a time. (at the moment it's something like 25)

Noz is right. It's all about usage. If you were just talking about a few people (10 or 20) at a time, I have a box here that I'd be willing to donate to the cause, and it's a full blown system. The issue is bandwidth. I only have a 256kbps upstream line, which means it would just be way toooooo slow for more than that number of people. And yeah, it costs a decent amount of moolah to do it. Pac Bell, er SBC, or Taco Bell, or whatever the heck they are calling their annoying selves this week are offering some good deals. I think you can get up to 2mbps up for around $70 more than I'm paying for my current line. The nice thing about that is that you not only have root, but if you accidently delete something you shouldn't have, you have console access. I think if you are going to run a system that resource hungry (and for the record, I run 7) you really need the full control. But I think 2 MB up would more than suffice for for a while. Unless we wanted to stream vid/aud.
On the otherhand, it's nice to have someone else doing your backups for you, and worrying about uptime. So I guess it's a catch 22, eh?

I recently upgraded my uplink to 384kbps upstream, so if it were needed in the future, I could probably add another IP address and install a third public box.

Hmm...here's an idea...what if we had an automatic redirect when you enter the main page and click the logo to a fast mirror? Then we could have a few and the databases would be synchronized between them every 10 minutes or so if someone posts. Then that would solve the problem of not enough bandwidth.
Or...maybe each server would be responsible for a couple of the boards! So like Writing and Art would be one mirror, General and Goof Off on another...and they'd all be accessible from the main screen! Good, eh?

Only really necessary when you are running a HUGE board though

On the subject of "more..."
What's the largest board anyone's ever heard of? I'm just curious how large forums can get.

The largest I've seen is that go-gaia one (an anime board). They tend to have about 2000 users online at a time. Something like 10,000,000 posts.

I'm impressed (in a roundabout way... some people have way too much free time on their hands). I had expected millions, but not 10 of them. How many posts do some of their more senior members have?
