Corel Painter

Postby Kireihana » Sun Jun 20, 2004 12:21 pm

I was wondering if Corel Painter is a good alternative to Adobe Photoshop. All I'm interested in is a good program for coloring CG art that uses the pressure-sensitive advantages of my Wacom tablet, so I don't really need all the extra gizmos Photoshop has. I have Paint Shop Pro 7 which works ok, but I've seen and admired what other artists have done with PS and Painter.

Here are the key things I'm looking for:
- Utilizes the tablet pressure-sensitivity
- Good for making lineart and coloring
- Lots of cool brushes and effects
- Best value possible

So should I go for Painter, or twiddle my thumbs and wish with all my heart that Adobe Photoshop will fall out of the sky?

Hi there Kireihana!

I doubt I can answer your question... I've never used Corel Painter before, though I've seen a LOT of people use it 0_o I do use photoshop though. I'm not sure what the difference between the two is really... sorry ^^v

Recently I've been using Deleter CG Illustrator a lot... I think I'm a little too obsessed with it. XD Have you ever tried that program? If you're looking for something simple that can do a lot of things then it's a really neat program, plus you can save files as event files and watch yourself draw it all over again. *laughs* It's a lot like Open Canvas. I can send you the link to the Deleter CG trial version if you'd like to try it out ^_^ It's really fun, and was a lot easier for me to figure out than photoshop.

Keep twiddling!
You can get it at Costco (do they have those where you live?) for $100 or so...
At least you're not saving up for Maya. ^^

Lots of ppl use painter. Photoshop is more for editing photos, but it also a good coloring program. Painter works best with wacom tablets and specializes in painting. So there are various coloring tools like paintbrush, airbrush, even a marker tool. Photoshop and Painter are two very good programs and would recommend it....although they're very complex (i needed to get some help online and have a PS7 for dummies book ^^;; ).
I know more about the program than how to use it.....so don't trust my words about the program. Oh how i wish i had painter and a wacom tablet......;>>

Ok thanks... I think I'll just download all the trial versions and see how everything works out. It kind of blows my mind how many people out there have Photoshop - where do they get it? There's no way I can afford it.

Kirehana, you can find the demo for PS somewhere,
but I suggest that you try getting Open Canvas over at
http://www.portalgraphics.net
-it's very smooth, and good for coloring

By the way, I am SO happy
that you made a thread about Painter!
-I've been wanting to try it for quite some time,
but I must see if there's a trial version available
(if someone can tell me where I am able to get one, please send me a PM or reply in this thread)

I think you'd like Open Canvas though
-it's like Photoshop, but MUCH less expensive
and can do things a bit differently

****
Pepper!
-yay! what is this program that you're talking about
o.0;; I have NEVER heard of it, but it sounds AWESOME
send me some information, okay?

I found some free software!

Postby Daiko-chan » Sat Jun 26, 2004 1:30 pm

I know that this isn't exactly what you said that you were looking for earlier, Kirehana- but this is really great, and even better... FREE!

this is a program called Art Rage
and what it does is emulate traditional media
such as: oil paints, crayons, felt-tip markers, and more

you can read a short article about it here:
http://news.deviantart.com/article/14323/

and afterwards you can look at the site for Art Rage
and download it here:
http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html

-there you go.
(by the way, Art Rage ROCKS!! )

-Daiko~
(sorry for the bump, and all
but this is really awesome-
and worth talking about
-I think I'll bring it up again at a later time...
and put this link in my sig! )

Thank you, Daiko-chan. You can download the Corel Painter demo here. I haven't downloaded any demos yet because I don't have time right now to experiment with them, but I'm looking forward to trying out all those cool programs as soon as things slow down around my house a bit. O.O;

Hiya ^-^

You can download Deleter CG here:
http://www.cgillust.com/eng/

It's a lot like OC, but I've found a few differences ^-^ If you play with the two long enough you'll find them. The link leads to a site where you can get the trial version (hee hee, too many trial programs XD) but if you want to save anything more than once you'll have to copy and paste to a different program. I so want to get the full version... that'd be awesome...

I'm not sure how, but somewhere my sister downloaded the full version of Photoshop 6 somewhere online... it was quite a while ago though. That's how I got it XD

-MUCH thanks to Kirehana, and Pepper on this...

Kirehana, Corel Painter 8 is really wonderful
and you may like it for doing CG work and all
but I really think that Art Rage is excellent and that it should be given lots of usage since it's so wonderful [it is FREE and GOOD- what more should I say?]

Pepper, thanks for letting me know that
Open Canvas isn't the same as Deleter
(but I would like to know more about these differences
-how is this legally possible? they seem too similar
who made these two programs anyway?...)

-sigh- I'd say more,
but... ^_^;
it's LITERALLY past my...

bedtime.
