Names...I need a NAME

I need help for a name for one of my characters. This is somewhat of a special case as the character in question is a...is a...a bug. A big bug, about the size of a full-grown german shepherd. He (she, it) is black, looks something like a gigantic pillbug with two pincers and a tail, and communicates mentally. I was thinking of calling it "Dark" but the character was inspired by a book in which these certain gigantic man-eating bug things were called "the Dark", so it's hardly original. I'm looking for a one-syllable noun to name him, preferably in English. He's a good guy, so nothing morbid please. He's actually quite sweet, as much as a sentient psychic bug can be.
boy, was that awkward.

All I can think of is "Fred." Fred the German shepherd-sized bug... it has a nice ring to it.

What about Hruen. It's a name I made up in an RP on another site for a giant bug that carries a Gondola up to a floating island. I kinda got the idea for the bug from Final Fantasy 9, but the name I made up. You can use it if you want.

Splice
Invert
Amp
Gash
Those are just a few I could think of off the top of my head. And yes I know 'invert' is two syllables, I just really liked that one.

Some nouns for exploration, depending on it's personality.
Side, Shed, Bear, Steel, Vent, Barb, Skit, Gloss, Stain, Toad, Boar, Burm,
Brick, Umber, Sight, Notch, Rook, Shrew, Sandal, Blackburn, Rake...

I'm sorry. My bug is qute a sweetheart...and a bit...I can't think of the adjective right now, but he just about LIVES to serve. He loathes a promotion, or even the idea of one, and is completely loyal to the hero.
Actually, I'm partial to Esoteric's names Umber, Barb, and and Rook, but more suggestions would be appreciated.

If he's a kind hearted bug, call him something tame like Lewis, John, Froaderick, George.
If you want a Fantasy name call him something like Rochbar, Gogga, Gangling, Dringle or maybe Gonstragz.

thanks for all your help guys, but I'm thinking of naming him after a musical term, a la RahXephon. That's because his "master" is a very dedicated musician... but thanks again. sorry

"Ink."
I know, you've decided, but I thought it was cute. I may use it myself, but I thought I'd toss it in for you!
