The View from the Equator

Postby sharikqah » Tue May 19, 2009 10:07 am

Writing this at 12:51 AM local time, so I should be saying "Good morning."

I'm sharikqah, from Singapore, hence the title. I first came to know about this site because I was doing a film module on Japanese film & Anime at my university in 2008. This site was also mentioned in a 2007 edition of Plugged In magazine, an entertainment guide of the Focus on the Family series of magazine.

Without doubt, I find the idea of Christians discussing & examining Anime a necessary step towards a more wholesome view of media. There's a need for us to see the sacred in the profane, questionable and postmodern.

I'm also hoping that the contributions to this site will help me to learn to use Anime & Manga as platforms for evangelism - which I feel is a under-utilized, under-researched area.

About myself: I'm a sociology student (so forgive me if I ramble off too much academics), who enjoys long-distance running, soccer, hockey, tchoukball, writing poetry and short prose & drinking tea :)

I serve in media ministry, mainly online web maintenance & newsletter publishing. Additional ministry interests beyond Anime are Christian-Muslim dialogue & sports ministry.

Hello and a very warm welcome to you, Sharikqah. I hope you enjoy it here. ^_^
Also, just because I'm curious and too lazy to google it right now, what exactly is tchoukball?

Irasshaimase! I find it wonderful how many different countries get represented on this forum. I'm not sure if I recall any previous members from Singapore, so I guess you're opening yet another international office for us!

I get asked that question a lot. So I always keep links in handy hereand here.

To respond to ShiroiHikari's question, my favourite anime are Claymore, Basilisk & Evangelion, along with works by Miyazaki Hayao, Makoto Shinkai & Mamouri Oishii (especially Jin-Roh & The Sky Crawlers).

Hello Sharik. I'm Robin S. Firedrake, resident crazy dragon. Anything you like besides sports, poetry and tea? (Though I do like tea.) Those aren't really my strongest subjects... Actually I feel that is an understatement for I know nothing of sports or poetry and the only thing I know about tea is that I like the kind flavored with strawberry. Then again I know next to nothing about anime too. (But I've started reading a few manga I found at the library.) Anyhow sorry to bother you with such an odd post. I lie to either make a signature crazy greeting or one that involves something the new member likes. My imagination is drained for the day and as I just told you I know nothing of sports, anime or poetry. Sorry again for the odd post. I've been at the books again and that always makes me act a little odd for a while afterwards...

Singapore-la! I'll wait for the others from your part of the world to announce themselves. Myself, I lived for a month on Penang and have had the pleasure of visiting your fine city a few years ago, and I really don't remember any of my sketchy Malay anymore. ^_^;;
