Myst heads to the big screen

Blastr wrote:Aside from a number of game sequels, Myst also spawned a trio of novels—Myst: The Book of Atrus, Myst: The Book of Ti'ana and Myst: The Book of D'ni—that filled out the game's mythology and that will serve as a foundation for the feature film's story.
"Our aim with this project is to stretch the genres it operated within, much like the source material did," said Mysteria Film Group's Adrian Vanderbosch, who is partnering with Mark Johnson (Narnia) and Hunt Lowry (Donnie Darko) for the film.
"It is such an innovative property, and by utilizing the novels as our primary resource, we have the opportunity to offer audiences the essence of Myst without being limited only to the famous island of the first game. Our focus has always been on creating an entirely new visual experience driven by engaging characters and an epic narrative."

So it's going to be a movie, based on a book, which was based on a video game.
Can't see this going anywhere good.

And don't miss the part in Myst 3 where you will sit back in your theater seats and say, "HOLY EFF, DID THAT CREEPY BLONDE GUY JUST CLUB HIM IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD? I THOUGHT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO DIE IN THIS GENRE!"

The only thing that could make this scenario worse is if they announced a game based off of the movie. Or if they announced that it was going to be in 3D.

At this point, I'm just taking it as a given that it'll be in 3-D.
And it could be much worse. They could cast Hayden Christensen.

Posts like this make me realize that I'm probably the only person on CAA who has actually the Myst Trilogy and thinks it would make for a serviceable movie.
They're doing the Book of Ti'ana first, which has my approval since it's easily the best one.

I read this post and thought, "I actually
do have those somewhere!" So I dug around thorougly, and I couldn't find them anywhere. I think I sold them at a yard sale last summer. I have read them though, many years ago. They're actually not bad.
Book of Atrus was my favorite, though. But any one of them would make a passable movie. It's not like the movie would be based directly on one of the games. Although a film done entirely in first-person perspective is an intriguing idea.

I played the games but I never even knew there were books.

I remain cautiously neutral about this. It could go either way, really, and while I would be way more excited to hear that Robyn Miller is actually coming out with his movie after all this time, I wouldn't mind a Myst movie done right. There are many interesting things you could do with that starting point; the only question is whether they will be implemented or not.

It would be hilarious if they just reshot the original game either in real life with a stereo camera or in CGI, from the same perspective as the player, with the same dialogue and pathway as like...a playthrough by a production assistant. XD

That would only be hilarious for the first two minutes as realization sunk in that they were actually pulling something like that, and then it would be deadly dull and people would probably leave.

Not necessarily. The movie would be over in about that long if the production assistant knew exactly what to do right there in the library room.

They already tried this ages ago... I remember this movie was once slated for 2003 and then cancelled. I guess they're attempting to go at it again? Fail...

Ti'ana would be the place to start. Really, I felt it was the strongest of all the books with D'ni being the weakest. Still, I think they'd probably end up going with Atrus since that's the one that has the principal character in it.
