This may sound really geeky, but I am trying to create a dual boot laptop running linux and win xp. I have a licence for xp pro and a working image. I also have several linux images readily avalible. The problem is that the plain vanalla install disk for xp pro does not include sata drives and my comp does not have a floppy drive. I do not feel like investing in a floppy drive only to use it once or twice.

Does any one know how to create a working xp image from with in linux that would include the drivers?

Now, I'm having trouble understanding exactly what it is you're trying to do. From what I understand, you want to install linux and windows on your laptop drive under separate partitions, correct?
What gets me is that your windows disk doesn't support sata drives. It shouldn't matter what kind of drive it is, so long as the motherboard recognizes it. And what does a floppy disk have to do with anything?
You have a CD/DVD drive, right? That's all you should need. Just change the boot order in your bios so that it boots from the CD and you should be good to go.
It's best to install Windows first, and then install Linux on a separate partition. Windows is picky about it's MBR (master boot record), and doing it in that order will save you headaches.

wow....I really should stop disappering from this forum. I forgot I posted this, but I could still use the info.

The problem is that the factory win xp instalation image does not contain the drivers needed to use a sata hdd. The Hp disk does but it completely undoes all of your partitioning no matter what. From every thing that I read I need to some how include the drive files in the plain vanilla xp install image, but I only found instructions on how to do so from within a windows enviroment. I don't have a windows enviroment

Have you tried nLite yet to modify the Win XP install?
