Unlike anime, manga is much more mainstream and we can extrapolate trends and tastes far more reliably than from DVD sales. Here are some observations:

Japan really, really likes One Piece to a degree that I do not think we can really fathom. I mean, when a new volume outsells every other volume released that week combined in a day...

I suspect that FMA sold less than normal, since it ended about halfway into the year and I think a similar explanation holds for Nodame Canatabile, which I'm extremely pleased to see even showing up on this chart.

It pleases me to no end that Kimi ni Todoke is behind only One Piece and Naruto. That's quite an accomplishment, considering it's shoujo and it's not Ouran.

It's interesting to see that Durarara!! got a huge bump because of getting an anime. Its first three volumes are near the top of the chart, beaten only by some light novel about a girl who reads Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices by Peter Drucker. I guess it affected BakaTest and Index to a lesser degree but also notice that it isn't a factor at all for mainstream manga.

Wow. This was pretty cool to see- I've noticed that KnT scores consistantly high in these rankings- I may just have to pick it up to see whether I find it more appealing in that format. Especially since it's "shoujo and not Ouran", as you said

Saint Young Men scoring high seems an anomaly, but I'd like to see whether that hold out- is it a more long-term appeal? Same for REAL.

The one that I'm eyeing is the ranking for Vagabond. That's one that also seems to go pretty high on the rankings, though it's one that wouldn't usually be picked out as one.

But I'm hoping they being the Drrr!! light novels over- I'm dying to read them!

From what I understand, Saint Young Men is really that popular, same with Yotsuba&! and Oofuri. And Kimi ni Todoke is ridiculously popular; enough to get namedropped in Bakuman. I guess every so often, there'll be one of those titles that are mysteriously in there in a sea of shounen (Nodame was that series until it finished).

Durarara!! getting a bump in sales is pretty awesome. This probably raises the chances for a sequel. Also, I could probably just look this up, but did volume seven come out this year?

Well, remember that it's cheap enough for the target audience (adolescents) to buy and the target audience really, really likes both of those series. They aren't part of the Big Three for nothing.

Moshidora is really that popular? I hadn't even actually heard of it until they announced the anime.

I'm a bit surprised to see Nurarihyon no Mago in the top 10. I wasn't aware it had been selling quite that well. Otherwise, everything is pretty much exactly what you would expect.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere One Piece is basically the best selling Manga of all time by now.

Coincidentally, Fullmetal Alchemist vol. 27 hit shelves the day after these stats were compiled. Not sure how I feel about that.

I didn't feel like making a thread for this, but I thought it was interesting and relevant.

Who reads One Piece in Japan? Well, NHK says:

By age:
1-18: 12%
19-29: 43%
30-49: 32%
50+: 13%

That means 88% of readers are above the age of 18.

To contextualize this, One Piece started publication in August 1997, so it's been gaining momentum for over 13 years now; a good number of that 88% would have grown up alongside the series (someone who's 30 now would've been 17 when the first chapter came out) - though that 13% of them would have been, at a minimum, 37 years old when One Piece debuted is something else entirely.
