is it just me or do more mature mangas tend to be more popular or have a more consistent storyline? i'm not talking only about mature mangas in terms of content. i mean, the storyline is more mature as well as some of the themes. for example, Berserk. probably THE best manga out there and it's rated mature due to it's extreme content. another example, monster. Monster is also a mature manga and is also probably one of the greatest mangas ever to grace the face of this earth. other examples would be: Elfen lied, 20th Century Boys, Vagabond, Blade of Immortal, Gantz, Saikano, and Akira. all these mangas contain some very mature themes but are still great mangas. now i can't think of that many non-mature mangas out there that can be just as good othere than some IMO such as: FMA, Bleach, Tsubasa, Slam Dunk. anyways, this brings me back to my original question, "Is it just me or do more mature mangas tend to be more popular or have a more consistent storyline?" hopefully, this subject won't bring about arguments.

One Piece. So complex, yet still consistent in its story, and is one of the most popular series in Japan. It has some more 'mature' themes at time, but still manages to stay mostly light-hearted and "fun." It also manages to appeal to many demographics (kids, teens, and adults), which keep the popularity in Japan higher (curse you 4Kids...).

They don't have to be Mature to be that good, but most of the "less mature" ones don't seem to try quite as hard to do so.

Nah, I don't think I've noticed that. I've seen plenty of manga that have good storylines without the content of the mature volumes. Full Moon wo Sagashite, Rurouni Kenshin (ok, so it's pretty bloody, but it's not mature), Magic Knight Rayearth, and like you mentioned, Tsubasa Chronicle, all have good plots and consistent storylines. I guess it just depends on your personal taste. *shrugs*

Edited? Nothing has been edited in Monster to my knowledge, and only like four volumes of the English release are actually out at present.

I probably think the best manga in terms of plot and character developement is GantZ. However, it if ruined with frequent innapropriate material at a pornagraphic level that to put it simple, ruins it.

really?! i personally think that Berserk has a better plot than Gantz. and yes, i forgot to mention Gantz in my list good mature mangas.

Viz never edited anything objectionable. They did no editing whatsoever. Hence why it's called "Viz Signature" for older people who enjoy manga. A lot like Golgo 13, which has no editing whatsoever, and is rated M.

well, now that i've edited my post, i see that no more replies will be posted having to do with my note on monster.

I think that for the most part more "mature" manga is better, but there are definite exceptions.

I'm assuming you read manga scans for it with poortranslations thus resulting in worse language.

I laugh whenever I see the F word in a One Piece scan.

i suppose you could say that. it's not as bad for manga since you can edit it out via paint. but for animes, it gets really annoying when someone who could have easily said, "What the heck?" goes to, "What the h*ll?", and sometimes even, "What the f*ck?". it totally screws up the anime.

Even better is when you know Japanese and realize that the translated "what the h*ll" originally was nothing more than the characters saying "what." I know it's meant to "reflect the feeling of the line" or such but come ON...

I don't recall any till towards the end of the Skypiea Arc (and more in the DBF one). Yes, watching Norland randomly shout out "O-M-G" and "Mother F-er" made me want to laugh quite a bit. XD
It was so bad you could tell it was someone else translating it. =p
