Shojo manga

Postby Sparrowhawk » Mon Apr 11, 2005 2:56 pm

Uhh, I've been reading manga for a few months now, and something has been really bothering me. I don't know what is normal, since i only have one friend i know that likes manga. Is it really weird for a guy to like some shojo manga? I'm reading two manga under the category "shojo". However, it seems to me that it may be under that just because the main character is a girl, and there is not a lot of fighting. So what exactly makes shojo manga, "shojo" and am i just a really bad freak for enjoying a few (i don't read just shojo, and i don't read a ton of them, but some seem to me they can appeal to guys and girls, but are still called "shojo") Thanks

Final Fantasy 7

"The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

No.
Tons of guys read shoujo and tons of girls read shounen. In another thread this is discussed. I think they are called as they are due to who they mostly would appeal to, story lines and more emotions in the characters and all.
Youre not abnormal, it is quite alright for a guy to read shoujo and a girl to read shounen.

These terms generally apply to who the comics are marketed to in Japan. Manga like Sailor Moon, Fushigi Yuugi, Wallflower are aimed at teenage girls, while the Dragonball, Love Hina and Excel Saga were initially aimed at guys.

Adding to the mix, seinen manga are aimed adult males (the manga with the 18+ ratings go here, though not all are porn. Maison Ikkoku was a seinen manga) and josei manga are aimed at adult women.

Then if you really want to get confusing you have the pandering "shoujo for guys" like "High School Girls" which is written by a women and written about girls but aimed at teen guys. Tends to be pretty crass.

No, not at all, Many of my friends that are guys read Shojo manga. It doesn't really discern between gender, but shounen generally means there are more action-oriented, and shojo because main characters are often girls, and topics that girls are more likely to be interested in, such a sailor moon, Kodocha, etc. Just because it gives a particular term doesn't mean it is seperated for the genders, I find many shounen manga interesting and many shojo manga as well. ^_^
