Feeling extremely ignorant...

Okay, I just had to find somewhere to post this, and I guess this is the right place. I just started reading manga super super recently (2 monthes ago, about) and I would like to know what mangas are good. I read the Prince of Tennis, One Piece, and Megatokyo (yeah, I know, not really a manga, but still
!) I want to start reading Trigun, but I am having trouble finding the first volume. I don't own any 'cause my parents are pretty conservative and I don't want any of my younger siblings reading any of them, except maybe Prince of Tennis. I usually read them at bookstores 'cause i'm a really fast reader, and besides, they are so expensive!!!
I have never watched any anime, except for a couple episodes of Speed Racer when I was little, and I don't see any prospect of being able to watch any in the near future
. Arrg. so... after my rant, any suggestions?

I don't think your parents will like Inuyasha - there is bad language and (occasional and non-sexual) nudity.
Some 'clean manga' suggestions are Big O (if you like action stuff - it's got some romance, too), Azumanga Daioh (I haven't read much of this, but it should be ok - can someone who has read more of it help me out?), and I've heard good things about Fruits Basket.

ok, I really like action and i don't mind blood. I will try to find those. I will try very hard, in spite of the dreaded first edition gnome ( you know, the one that steals all the first editions in the bookstore)

Well, Azumanga Daoih has some *ehem* anatomical jokes related to the rather unrealistic proportions of some of the females. That's pretty much all you have to worry about there.
Fruits Basket is good too. The only thing you have to worry about is lanuage, some characters who act (or possibly are) gay to weird other characters out. In the first volume of the manga, we see Kagura un-transform and, though she's mostly obstructed by Kyo, we see a good portion of her hip and some of her chest-- but it's VERY undetailed and her arms is strategically placed.

Fruits Basket, Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicle, Angelic Layer, thes are all very good to start with and clean too! You will enjoy them a TON! ^^

I would watch out concerning Big O. There are some scenes with fanservicey outfits (or the lack of outfits...) I suppose you could just give them THE PEN.

Yeah, but sometimes it's not as easy to THE PEN something as you would think. I mean, overly endowed women-- can't do anything about that (except if you have THE PEN II: White out edition. Even then, it's hard.

Yeah, but then you'd just have a big puddle of white-out and would have to redraw it with the PEN I, right?

Yeah, *sigh* that's the general idea, and it's pretty sad when I get to the redrawing phase. First they were overly endowed. And now they're mutated.

Alright, if action is what you want, I can give some recommendations. First, since you have read One Piece and The Prince of Tennis, I'll recommend some of the other Shonen Jump titles.
Click on the title of each to go to the sites.
Rurouni Kenshin: Excellent historical action/romantic comedy set in Meiji-era Japan and a very good translation job from Viz.
Naruto: If you like ninjas...
Hikaru no Go: Story about a boy, an ancient game, and a ghost...
Bleach: Fairly recent manga that has become a hit.
Yu Yu Hakusho: Chronicles of Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei.
Shaman King: A tournament occurs once every 500 years...
Case Closed/Detective Conan: Haven't read this one yet but it's something that you might want to check out if you like mysteries.
Rave Master: Very entertaining action/shonen manga.
Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: A decent Clamp adventure/crossover manga.
And that should do...
I do feel obligated to say that several of the titles I mentioned have fairly heavy dosages of mythology involved (especially Shaman King). Not sure how you or your parents feel about that. But, you should be able to find something up there that interests you.

Thanx, MasterDias! I will be sure to check some of those out. And my parents are usually pretty ok with mythology and stuff

I'd recommend getting something like Shonen Jump (it's a collection of shonen manga from Japan). If you subscribe you get it once a month (or you can just read it at the store
). It has a nice variety and some good manga. It also shows previews to other mangas. So, yeah. It's good.
