Srgt. Frog

Not a series I'll be continuing. It had a few funny moments, but a manga that is supposed to be in the humor genre needs more than that every volume.

Reading Serenity, and lagoon engine einsatz. Both are pretty good, but Lagoon has a lot of references to "gods" which I didn't care for so with a bit of marker they became Aods! :P And the whole females turns into males is a bit disturbing just so long as they don't get into romantic issues it can be ignored. *crosses fingers*
Serenity was really funny cheesy I really liked it can't wait for this months book!

I should mention I subscribe to Tokyopop's free online manga. Overall I'm not terribly impressed by their selection, but I do always follow:
Warcraft
Juror 13 (probably the best manga there, if not the most enjoyable)
Riding Shotgun (better development than I had expected)
Mark of the Succubus
A Midnight Opera

Most of the ones I liked they stopped putting online after the first volume (including Psy-Comm, unfortunately). Still, I won't complain because it is free. Though I followed Sorcerers and Secretaries for a while, the character development really started disappointing me after a while.

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

-Ouran High Host Club

I began reading this at my friend's house. I didn't like it at first, but halfway into the first volume it was starting to get pretty good. It's well drawn, has quirky characters, plus Haruhi is just amusing to watch.

A variety of reasons:
1) It's only four volumes, so it took very little of my time.
2) A friend told me to read it and lent me the series.
3) Part of me was vaguely curious how it would end.
4) Aforementioned enjoyable themes.

Just because I find a lot to critique doesn't necessarily mean I don't think it was worth my time, though this one was borderline. I stopped after the first volume, but a few days later there was an opportunity to finish it at a time that it seemed the best available option.

New find: "Unearthly" from Gomanga's "Seven Seas" division. This is Amerimanga, but very good, very original. And nice artwork. A couple questionable bits of dialog, but in general, I recommend.
Recently read the first three volumes of "Candidate for Goddess". I have to say, I was surprised. I had not expected it to be as good as it was. I'm not sure if I will continue (I found the three I have in a garage sale, cheap) but I may.

I read the first volume of Ororon, too, and loved the art style and all, but at that point it was far too disturbing for me to continue. What did you think of the later books, though? If given the chance, I might finish the series at some other time.

The art style was one of the things I strongly disliked. I can accept a certain degree of style over realism, but this simply got in the way, in addition to being annoying in many aspects. If you were disturbed by the first volume, you'll be more so by the rest (more senseless death, more gore, more nihilistic characters, an ending without resolution). It was this consistent meaninglessness that interested me, but it isn't something I'd recommend to everyone.

After the first volume, the rest of the series takes place in a surprisingly short amount of time. There are a lot more characters introduced, but it is essentially all one big conflict. Given how many pages were given to fighting, I thought it was rather weak. Most of the new characters don't have much depth, just casual bitterness and angsty backstories (some of which seem completely thrown in). The plot does improve; there is one conversation near the end that casts a different light on many of the events that have occured (in essence it reveals that most of what the series focuses on doesn't really matter).

There were a lot of things that weren't really explored, which was disappointing. No one of any importance from Heaven makes an appearance, and "God" doesn't do much more than mope around in the astral plane. The ending stretched almost to monotony for me (just die already), but thankfully this didn't go long before it obtained a more effective resolution.

What almost made me stop reading the series is the simple fact that I hated the central issue: the relationship between Ororon and Girlwhodoesn'tmatter. It sort of springs up from nothing, and hence that is about it is worth. If this impromptu relationship had been used to show the desperation of humans/demons for intimacy, no matter how artificial, I might have been interested, but I couldn't escape the sense of a sloppily done romance.
