Stan Freberg's Green Christmas
In 1958, Radio personality Stan Freberg (The address is a wikipedia link so you folks can find out just who this person is. I had no idea he voiced Pete Puma!) recorded a sketch called Green Christmas. It was a satire that criticized the overcommercialization of Christmas. I thought you folks might like the poignancy of the satire. The link to the clip can be found by clicking here. (Note: the video has nothing to do with the satire.)

Hm. I'm not big on people complaining about the commercialization of Xmas. If it wasn't for all the complaining, I might not notice. I like having something tangible to do; I remember once I almost went overdrawn buying presents—if it wasn't for a coupon I had, which left me with $0.98 in the bank. And you know what? It felt good walking out of the store, and even better on Xmas morning after the wrapping paper came off.

Amusing... but brevity being the soul of wit, I found Tom Lehrer's Christmas Carol (1955) more concise and funny, and covered the same territory. Available here.

I was just telling some people about this skit a couple of days ago.
I love this skit! Did you know that Stan Freberg also voiced the baby bear on the Looney Tunes 3 bears? He also voiced the alien of Freakazoid! and satirized political correctness 30 years before the term was coined (on "Old Man..." I mean "Elderly Man River"). Another good Christmas skit he wrote was called "Christmas Dragnet" or "Yulenet", and his version of "Nuttin' For Christmas" is probably the best where he includes the burglar.

Hey, I agree with you there.
This year I bought my boyfriend a PS3, my dad a $100 canadian tire gift card, my sister an IPOD, my brother a couple xbox games, my mom a movie box set.
I also got my bff a bamboo drawing pad, and my other bff some vinyls.
I mean, I love getting people stuff.
I'M flat broke now, but seriously... it's what people wanted, I KNOW they'll be happy.
Its when I'm obligated to buy people something they don't want that bothers me.
I don't mind the commercialism of christmas, I just don't like when people whine about it. If you don't like it, don't get into it.
Or something.

Stan Freberg is probably my favorite comedian of all time. It's cool to see other people who know/enjoy his stuff.

I think the problem is that people lose the reason they're celebrating in the midst of the celebration itself. This is true of any celebration, really, but it's especially offensive at Christmas because of the meaningful remembrance of Jesus's birth being overshadowed by materialism.
I don't mind giving or receiving gifts on Christmas, but the focus of the celebration should be on Jesus. On a related note, I think we make a huge mistake by pushing the idea of Santa on our children. It's just really messed up if you think about it.
"Okay, kids, Christmas is a holiday where we celebrate Jesus taking the form of a human so that he could be our Savior because we have all sinned and fallen short of God's glory."
then telling them
"Now then, there's a nice, jolly old man in a red suit with reindeer and elves who's going to come here on Christmas and give you stuff if you're good little children!"
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Santa-hater or anything, but quite honestly I believe it teaches kids to be greedy and buy into the materialism of the American culture. "Just write to Santa and tell him all the stuff you want!"

But hey, in that video, did the guy say "Abercrombie"?! How long have they been around?!
