So do Texans (and the Deep South, from what I hear.) Kinda funny to think Dixie would have anything in common with Japan, but in both places you can find all sorts of bizarre pickles.

As for the Japanese kind, my favorites are Pickled Daikon and Umeboshi.

Oh, how I have waited for this thread to come into existence! Long live sushi!

I, too, am a hardcore sushiphile, in case it wasn't already clear to you, yet.

I never really know what any of it is when I get it, but I like to try whatever sushi I can find, which is usually the limited selection at Japanese/Chinese buffets.

I had some outstanding (to my uncultured tongue) sushi this weekend! Commoner's choice: spicy tuna, spicy slamon and salmon w/ cream cheese. SO tasty. Hail, maki!

I believe I had monkey sushi once. It was in some odd oriental place that I couldn't distinguish what culture.

I've been an avid sushi eater for five years now. I love it.

I remember the first time I had it. Me, my dad, and one of my sisters were outside a store and he told me if I didn't eat it (it was squid on this one) I wouldn't be getting any lunch at all. After much protesting I finally ate the thing . . . and I've fallen in love with sushi ever since. XD

I love Las Vegas rolls, but I also have a variety of favorites ranging from an Avocado Roll to many various raw sea-foods for Nigiri.

I love the stuff. Oddly enough, about all our Chinese buffets around here carry all-you-can-eat sushi. It's not the best, but it's usually pretty good (especially if it's supper time). A local Chinese/Japanese restaurant serves some really good affordable sushi, as does the local Rain Thai Bistro. I'm all about affordable sushi because I can't afford the expensive stuff right now. My favorites include:

Salmon and cream cheese rolls
Salmon, tomato, avacado, and mayonaise rolls
Egg
Tempura fried tuna rolls
Yellowtail rolls
Salmon, cream cheese, avacado, tempura fried rolls

I do not like squid, and I usually don't eat shrimp or crab, though one time I had crab with tempura fried pumpkin with curry powderr and tonkatsu sauce. THAT was AMAZING!

Five years ago I called it 'bait' and made fun of it.

Then something mysterious happened. A Japanese restaurant popped up next to a store where we were buying Christmas presents and we had to wait for the gifts to be wrapped. it was a freezing cold day so we staggerd into the nearly empty restaurant to wait, and had some miso soup and eggplant stuffed with wasabi salmon.

Gradually I thawed toward sushi. Now I eat it every Friday. And the restaurant has become so busy you're hard-pressed to find a table.

I could name rolls, but the names wouldn't mean anything. Whatever is based on spicy crunchy tuna is good. I'm hoping to try a new roll for Ash Wednesday.

For those in the Dallas area, I've discovered what I've decided to declare the best affordable sushi place north of LBJ. Check out 'Masami Japanese Sushi & Cuisine' on the southwest corner of Beltline and Central Expressway. Great decor, very fresh fish, and great non-sushi menu for your dining companions who would rather eat teriyaki, udon, soba, whatever.

i went to an actual japanese place owned by actual japanese people with actual japanese waitresses last week for a really late birthday dinner. IT BLEW MY MIND THAT THEY WERE ACTUALLY JAPANESE AND NOT KOREAN!!! I couldn't believe it. Its probably the only place within 100 miles where the sea urchin is actually safe to eat, so I had some. Good stuff. But what really threw me back was the yellowtail sashimi. It was like melt-in-your mouth awesome. Authenticity makes a difference.

Yesterday I've got some sushi called "Cherry Blossom." It has tuna wrapped around the rice, salmon and avocado inside the rice.

We tried a new roll called the New Orleans (maybe in honor of the Super bowl Saints?)

Salmon and melon wrapped in pink rice paper with avocado and chili-seared tuna on top. Yum!

I love sushi...but these days I find myself in a Kentucky suburb full of drunken rednecks. The only way I get my sushi fix is if the grocery across the street happens to have some california rolls in stock. You know, that Okami stuff.

Before my taste for sushi had begun to blossom, I used to eat at this Japanese bistro back in Flint. Usually I went there for the miso and unadon, but once I tried the raw tako sushi. As I recall, it was expensive, but very good - almost tasted like it was smoked, though supposedly it was raw. Cut up into beautiful slices, with a cucumber. I can still see and taste it...

I like California rolls, crab salad rolls, and tempura shrimp rolls. But that's about it. I don't have a stomach for spicy things, and I'm still getting used to the seaweed idea. XD

Target sells Sushi for a decent price. Granted, it's packaged, but it's still great tasting stuff! I get it almost every day! Sadly though, the good stuff is always taken by the lunch crowd, so I'm always left with some of the regular rolls. But it's always good!
