The nuclear strong force is a complex process and that name was given it before we completely understood how it worked. Gluons are one type of particle involved in this process. Beyond that, I'm afraid I'm not qualified to discuss how they work. A pastor I know suggests that Christians should wear tiny gold nooses, because the cross has lost its meaning as a symbol of death. I mention this mainly because he's also made the electric chair joke.
