I think this is way over the line. I'm for keeping our airlines safe, but not when the government chooses to do an invasive search on my person without probable cause.

I can't believe they're even aloud to do this. Isn't this against human rights? I mean...they even do this to children!? Can you imagine how traumitizing that must be for a little kid let alone an teenager or an adult!?

The article in the OP is a little bit over the top, on the "nude scanning" machines especially. From a different blog:

The TSA implemented the new body-search procedures at Boston and Las Vegas airports because they’re using the greatest number of walk-through full-body scanners. Those scanners use low-dose X-rays to produce two-sided, head-to-toe images of passengers’ bodies — including discernible but not distinct images of their private parts - but blur facial features.

Source

This makes it sound a lot less like a bunch of strangers will be viewing "nude images of yourself and your children," as the facial features are blurred, and the private areas are not distinct. Either way, the new process is only undergoing testing in a couple of airports as I understand it, before they release it on a wider scale. With the critique it's getting, it's not likely to last much longer. Granted, that article is from August, so it may be more widespread now after all. XD

At any rate, here's a link to the TSA website's description of the new procedures:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1049.shtm

Personally, I'm hoping this doesn't last long at all. XD I am not looking forward to having my first flight experience someday ruined by inappropriate groping. XD

The only major problem I had with said scanners was that they had the viewing monitor literally on the other side, for all the world to see, or at least the part that had already passed it. I also don't like that the pictures were stored by several agencies, despite several promises that this would not be the case.

That being said, I've always been for some quick and effective scanners to make the security measures shorter and more effective. Just get two checkpoints that don't require a hundred steps and don't store the pictures if there is nothing that's worth to be storing.

The Amsterdam airport has tightened it's security quite extensively, but privacy should still be respected. As long as they got sober secuirty guards who won't mess around or send said pictures around then I don't really care. Just have the pictures away from the public, make it quick and easy and it should be good.

Who wants to let their doctor see them naked? That's just...I mean, what if he's a pervert or something?

On that note, I can see all of your email addresses and find where you live by your IP addresses. Just sayin'.

There's been a lot of news about this from just about everywhere.

Except that law enforcement agencies should not have our email addresses, IP addresses, or medical information without some kind of subpoena. Also, there's the fact that you and your physician should have a working relationship and you should trust them, and if you don't, why aren't you switching doctors? And of course, there's nothing preventing me from using an SSH tunnel through my VPS on the west coast or something.

The right to unreasonable search and seizure is a right for a reason. It's not just a way to make it harder for law enforcement to do their job.

And as for the promises that pictures aren't stored? Welp.

Also, stuff about the scanners using an unsafe dosage of radiation. That might suck.

And of course, there's the fact that Israel of all places has less invasive flight security screening but somehow manages to be more effective.

I imagine that the continued backlash will end this in a timely manner. If it does not, I expect that there may be some very large delays at the US airports for the next six or so months.

Eh, I've known about this for awhile and frankly it doesn't bother me too much though. Yes, it is kind of an invasion of privacy, but living in the post 9/11 era of tight airport security I don't think it's terrible and is probably better then the alternative of mandatory frisking or the other alternative of going back to how we were where anyone could walk to any gate in the airport with only metal detectors and x-ray's for security. Seeing how the first alternative is uncomfortable (and I would know) and the second option made 9/11 possible, I'll just live with what they are doing and hope they don't become too paranoid.

Having been there, yes and no. If you're Jewish or a white American who doesn't look suspicious by their definition, it's less invasive. If you look Arab, aren't from Israel, and/or seem suspicious in your mind, expect to be interrogated and have your suitcase torn to pieces. We actually had somebody in our group get interrogated because he was of darker complexion and had a beard. Then again, if we are talking about scanners, if the US adopts this across the board, then yes, we will be more invasive and take a longer time then Israel. However, Israel right now has security about the same as the US if not a little more tight and time consuming (for international flights at least...).

Is it sad that I would go through one of those scanners secretly hoping that someone would actually want to see me naked?

Wait! I think I might have just found the solution to all these problems thanks to this post! Just go through security in the nude, nobody will have any reason to stop and search you (though you might get arrested).

Not to mention the radiation levels of such scanners. There's a reason they don't scan your 'whole' body when they X-ray you.

omg peanut, that is gross. >_> ugh, this thread should have MATURE in it's title

that being said, i do think that this is going too far. i go on a trip once a year, and it usually means going in a plane. i've always thought that security was highly annoying but this is just.....>_> i do hope that i'll never have to go through one of these. one time, i received a patdown, because i forgot to take off my metal ring. boy was that time-consuming....>_>

i already thought that going through suitcases randomly was an invasion of privacy. but THIS is amazingly intrusive. i really do hope that it won't stay....

plus, it's not healthy :P
