Liberalism

Talk about anything in here.

Hmm. I don't see anything terribly offensive about that link. As long as you are pretty clear what it is, and what to expect, I don't think it's an issue. Besides, if people want to debate politics, we'd rather they did it elsewhere.

Since your post was clearly note a debate, and only expressing your views, I think you're safe. :)

The political compass was fun, I'm way over with Ghandi. I can't believe I just made a comparison between me and Ghandi, that's a first.
Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate. Without them, what would shape our lives? Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn't fall in love, or have babies, or be who we are. After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you're very lucky, a plane ride away.

In case anyone's curious, I ended up at :
Left/Right -6.0
Lib/Auth. -1.44

Which is probably about right.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Yah. That's the one I was talking about. I got:
Economic Left/Right: -3.50
Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.82
but that was a while ago. I wonder if it's changed...

Mothers may have careers, but their first duty is to be homemakers.

The way that's worded, I'm going to get placed as extreme conservative... If it said "women" my response would have been different. I do believe that a Mother's (and Father's) prime directive is raising the children right... Nope, it placed me more towards the left in my social and economic beliefs... How did THAT happen? It puts me at about the same place as the Pope... hahaha... That's funny.

I think some of the questions were way too close ended to accurately rate where I stand.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly how I felt about it.

Also, I was wishing there was a "neutral" or "apathetic" option to some of those questions... since I'm so completely ignorant on a few of the issues.

My scores:
Economic Left/Right: 3.00
Libertarian/Authoritarian: 1.85
(between Gerhard Schroder and Tony Blair, apparently)

That is a good reflection of my values. I am a pretty staunch conservative, especially in economic matters. I am a bit more libertarian than the scale would suggest, and in general I am against grand social experiments.

I am pro-life, but I am also a supporter of the death penalty for heinous crimes. I believe in the superiority of a free market, and in helping corporations.

I do like to discuss politics, although I find that most people are immune to arguments intended to change their political opinion.

I think I'm more conservative and libertarian than that. Not much to say really, unless I just quote other people who have already posted here.

Admittedly, some of the answers could have allowed for more nuance, although there's probably no test that can ever completely capture something as complicated as a personal politcal stance. Any data point can be assumed to have some uncertainty associated with it. In any case, the graph puts me at about the same position as Chretien on the Lib./Auth. scale which I'd agree with, and then somewhere to the left. Although I'm usually to the "right" of the NDP on a number of issues (usually relating to defence and industrial policy).

Offended by Cephas' comments just after mine... he seemed to be accusing me of things I am not guilty of. I was misinterpreted.

When I voted for the candidate I voted for, I DID NOT KNOW that she was strongly pro-choice. It wasn't an issue that came up in the state election, and I didn't hear about it. I voted for her on the ecomomic and education issues. If I had known her stance on the abortion issue, I don't know if I would have voted for her. And it is A FRIEND OF MINE WITH WHOM I STRONGLY DISSAGREE who is pro-choice on the stance of population control. We've nearly gotten into some bad fights over our dissagreement on the issue, me being pro-life.

I'm not into "sitting on our hands while the country goes to Hell" as he seemed to have put it. It's just that in elections, sometimes it comes down to a choice based on important immediate issues. I don't think I have seen a single major candidate in any election with whom I agreed with on every issue. Sometimes, to vote for one candidate means that you are voting for someone who is supporting the murder of the sick poor by denying them health programs to get their prescription drugs and other vital things while trying to avoid someone who is pro-abortion. It's the sad truth. I was also not stating that we should sit back and let the country be given to corruption on this or any other issue, we should speak up, I was just saying that we have a long road and a lot of work, as general social attitudes these days devalue certain kinds of human life. Life in our world is very cheap. I'm not saying that it is something we should just sit back and let happen, I'm just saying that it is, and that it's probably going to be a long time before the trend is reversed, if ever.

Let's get back to the fun part of this thread, folks! *ahem*

Undoubtedly.

For the record, my numbers were 1.62 and 2.51, respectively.

Took test. Gargh! I accidently closed the window! I don't have my exact numbers! Anyway, I found myself middle-high libertarian/left, fairly close to Nelson Mandela.

This thread has gone on long enough. While you guys were for the most part "playing nice"--and I appriciate that--there's really no reason for political threads to be here. They are neither Christian nor anime related, and for the most part merely stir up controversy. We should have caught this sooner, yes, but the staff is only human as well.

While I'm not sure I agree with everything Ashley posted, she is absolutely correct that this thread needed to be closed. It was living way past its viable purpose, if indeed it had any. Personally, I say good riddence.
