Metroid Prime 3.

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Metroid Prime 3.

Less then two weeks to go for the last game in the Prime trilogy. Do you plan to buy it? Are you excited?

I plan to buy it this month. I'm very glad it's staying as a single player game, and while the lack of "being alone" atmosphere seems to be diminished. I am excited for what could possibly be the most in-depth story to a Metroid game. But it definitely feels different from the past games.

Also, I wonder how, or if, Metroids will play a very large role in this game. I hope they do, but I really can't be certain yet.

I lament my lack of Wii. I really really really really reallyreallyREALLY want this game--I watched the first hour of it on YouTube because I couldn't stand the suspense!

It looks like it controls beautifully.

[spoiler]I'm also a bit upset with Gandrayna's personality. She looks like she's going to be a total bubble-head. And I thought she was gonna be AWESOME...[/spoiler]

At least the voice acting is superb. What really shocked me was when General what's his face swore. Metroid has been clean for 20 years without it, why now? I was really disappointed they would sink to that, but what can anyone do? XD

As for Gandrayna, I'm keeping my opinion on her silent until I go through all the game. Don't judge a game until you've played ALL OF IT. Always.

Eh...that isn't sinking too low. Shadow the Hedgehog was rated E10 and it had swearing in it. Just be glad this is language they added in and not (knock on wood) anything fanservicey...

Anyway, yeah...I'm really really excited for this game...it will be awhile until I buy it though since I'm away at college and I left my Wii at home, but I bought a Wii because of MP3 so...yeah...I'm going to get it as soon as I can.

Heh . . . you must not have gotten any of the "best" endings for any of the 2D Metroid games . . . however, it should be noted that they don't really beat you over the head with it. Here's the "best" [under 2 hours with 100% items] ending for Metroid Fusion: You see much worse at any public pool or the beach, really.

[Rai note: If the moderators feel this link is out of line, I sincerely apologize.]

As to the language, as long as it isn't gratuitous [Boondock Saints and Snakes on a Plane, I'm a-lookin' at you], it doesn't bother me. In a high-tension, military context, profanity is not unheard of, so it's realistic in a sense. I by no means encourage the use of such language, but it doesn't bother me that much when it's in an easily understandable context.

I'll probably have to wait for this one, though, as I neither have a Wii [although I do have more than enough money for one] nor anticipate having much time for it any time soon ~ I just moved into college and want to be sure to hit the books plenty hard.

That's really the only time I approve of such words. XD I mean it's not like a soldier is going to go "OH FIDDLE STICKS! I NEED SATCHEL CHARGES! CRAP! DARN YOU JOHNSON! GIVE ME A SATCHEL CHARGE BEFORE THEY BLOW US ALL TO HECK!"

Although on the other side, I like the general or officer who is able to keep calm and precise during these times. A.K.A. Samus. But then, she's mute. What can you do? XD

But it's really just preference. I'm not going to fall over and act like it's the end of the series like Shadow. *shudders*

Some reviews have come in. They're surprisingly even more positive then what I was expecting.

I've been very worried with the game's development since it's first showing, thankfully being calmed down with each announcement. From the planned launch release to the hinting at a multilayer mode. I was expecting my experience (and I still am holding this judgment) with Prime 3 to be like that with Twilight Princess. A good game, but one that didn't stand up to the past games or disappointed me to the point where I felt like it was a step backwards in the series.

But so far I can at least be assured that some things have stayed the same.

"You can choose to play the game in normal or veteran difficulty, and when you complete the quest you will unlock the gameplay-extending ultra-hard hyper difficulty, which considerably ramps up the challenge."

Thank you Retro for remembering the hard-core gamer and Metroid fan.

Game Trailers has given it a 9.6 out of 10 and claims the Wii controls have surpassed dual-analog in accuracy and immersion. Although I'm sure everyone will continue to debate about that. What also stood out is when they mentioned that near the end of the game there's a collectathon for keys, which is unfortunate as the 4 to 5 hours leading up the that moment are the greatest moments of gaming ever burned on a disk. That's a very incredible claim and one I'd have to taste for myself.

IGN has given it a 9.5. No surprise. XD

Notice they didn't say it surpassed WASD Keyboard + Mouse. Nothing will surpass that. NOTHING I TELL YOU, NOTHING! [/PC Fps fanboyism]

All I have to say is that I'm glad that some good rated games are FINALLY coming out for Wii... Been disappointing for most titles lately :/ Never been in the Metroid fanbase myself (I'm still surprised that Samus is a girl...), but at least I know there is hope for more good games to be Wii-approved^^

Hope? There have been good Wii games before Corruption. Super Paper Mario...SSX Blur (I liked it)...VC games...

Okay, there's been a drought. I admit it.

(Back on topic)

Sheesh, GameSpot has lost all credibility as far as I'm concerned. I already criticized them for the lack of reasons giving TP an 8.8/8.9 (Even though I myself was disappointed with the game, but for different reasons). And now they say one of the disappointing factors of Prime 3 is the lack of multi-player.

Multi-player.

I think it's pretty silly to complain that Gamespot rated TP an 8.8 or an 8.9. As far as I'm concerned, it deserved that rating. No way was it better than any previous 3D Zelda game.

Anyway, I picked up MP3 today at Gamestop. I played it for a few hours and it's amazing! Nonetheless, I pretty much agree with Gamespot's rating. Online multiplayer would have been a nice bonus (If they incorporated it in, I'm sure it would be better than MP2's) but it doesn't really need it.

Sounds like some legitimate complaints to me.Also, they mentioned the lack of multiplayer once in passing at the end of the review. It seems, to me, that the other complaints were along the same lines of why TP got the score it did. It's an old dog who hasn't learned any new tricks.

Regardless, 8.5 is certainly not a bad score. I don't understand why people insist on complaining about good reviews.

Well, I got to play it a little bit just now, played up until the first save station inside the ship.

I already hate the controls. XD Hopefully my dislike of the controls won't hinder my desire to enjoy this game, but when you don't like actually PLAYING a game it's hard to look past that.

I'm also sad to see they put "gimmicks" in such as having to push the remote into the screen to start thrusters on your ship, having to pull and turn things to open doors...it doesn't make me feel more "immersed" in the game, it makes me feel like I'm playing a dang Wario Ware minigame. If I wanted to play that, I'd play that, but I bought this to play a METROID game.

EDIT:
Phil wrote:I don't understand why people insist on complaining about good reviews.

Because you know fanboy logic, if it doesn't get a perfect 10 regardless of how legitimate the complaints are it's because "ZOMG the reviewer is a hater!"

I heard rumors of a more standard control option available in the game... is this true?

Also, thought it should be noted that I kinda hated Zelda:TP's controls at first, but after a while they really grew on me.

I had this problem with Metroid Prime 2. When I had played the original Metroid Prime, I was still accustomed to the tank style Golden Eye control scheme. I discovered Halo shortly there after, and the dual analog controls really hit a chord with me. After that, I could no longer stand the tank styla controls, and found that I was unable to play Metroid Prime 2. It funny to see that now that they have "fixed" the greatest gripe about the previous games, that there are still people who prefer the old way.

Also, I could have sworn that they had said that there would be an option for the old control scheme.....

See, I heard that too, but I scoured the control options and didn't see it. I dunno. Maybe they meant if you turn off Free Aim then the targeting reticule stays in the middle of the screen no matter which way you turn the remote in, but that wouldn't solve my dislike of the controls...and it also looks like that would turn Lock On off too?

*blinks*

I think I'm done arguing at this point. I'd run out of breath.

Ah well, I guess people just aren't as impressed with games today as they used to be. I'm really starting to think Corruption is going to be the Majora's Mask of the Metroid franchise.

I have my copy now. I'll make comments when I've beaten it.

It would be nice if Nintendo started releasing downloadable demos on the Shop Channel... because I want a chance to try the controls for myself. (I won't get the game until I finally get around to finishing Prime and playing Echoes.)
It would seem like the controls allow for a lot more precision and freedom of movement, but maybe it's something that works better on paper... =/ I know that Red Steel's controls worked decently, but were pretty clunky and aggravating. Got some kinda comparison between them?

The problem with Red Steel was that the aiming and turning movements were far too slow. Prime 3 has three sensitivity settings and advanced, the most responsive, is the only way to really play the game. Anything else is too basic or slow.

It takes some getting used too (as any Wii game does) but I REALLY love how it feels. Although I really can't compare it to anything else as Metroid Prime is the only FPS/FPA I've ever enjoyed playing.

I think the controls are amazing. It's vastly superior compared to MP1 and MP2's controls. Now granted I have mine set to "Advanced" as well because I can't stand the Basic ones. I was actually a tad disappointed that the target reticle still sort of moved out of the center (Unlike a PC FPS), but I quickly grew accustomed to it. Works like a charm for me. I didn't really mind the little "gimmicks" they threw in either.

And Redsteel just sucked. It was slow, had the idiotic bounding boxes, and was just an overall bore.

Sigh. I'm starting to really dislike this game to the point of trading it in...I don't want to. I was looking SO forward to this game, I wanted it so bad, and I can't stand to play it, and it makes me mad.

The Grappling Lasso made things worse. Sorry, Nintendo, Retro Studios, but I'm uncoordinated. So when I'm fighting a pirate with a shield and I grab his shield and pull it off, I move my OTHER arm too. Then Samus goes looking in the opposite direction or up at the sky while the pirate is free to blast me as I desperately try to get him in my sights again so I can shoot him.

That REALLY grinds my gears. Scanning is a pain now too, since you can't just simply press a button and swap to a scan visor. NOOOO, you have to HOLD down a button and point at another part of the screen to swap visors. I scanned EVERY single thing I came across in the first two Metroid Prime games. In this one switching visors is such a hassle I've missed a lot of scans because I'm just too irritated to switch to the scan visor.

Why do companies have to RUIN all my favorite game series? This is just total crap.

Nate, it's OKAY.

I myself have played a number of highly rated games that I just couldn't get into. And if this is the case for you with Prime 3, I won't argue or defend the game for you. Trade it in and play what you would much rather enjoy.

I personally am already convinced this game is better then Prime 2 from my 3 hours of play, but as I said, there's going to be different opinions with this game.

*nods sagely* I admit, I've done this before. I've played a game greatly regarded as excellent, and find myself unable to really get into it. I'm that way with a lot of Mario platformers, actually. The 2-D ones. They're perfectly servicable platformers, but I could never get into them. Yet strangely, I adore Super Mario Sunshine, which is probably the most maligned Mario platformer ever. (Well, that depends on how you view the American SMB2/Doki Doki Panic.)

I really tried to like SMB3/SMW. I really, really did. I am very sorry.

Now, I DO like Super Mario Land 2, so you can't fault me there. XD

Ah yes, you and the 2-D Mario games. *glaaaaaaare* XD

Actually, even I'll admit I've found a game that has surpassed Super Mario Bros. 3 and World.

NiGHTS Into Dreams..., in my opinion, is better then both those games.

Yeah, it's more my friends than the game. We have a blast with pretty much any multiplayer game, no matter how lame it is. And the hitman mode where you get instructions through your wii-mote... I thought that was pretty fun, though it got repetative pretty quickly.

Anyway, Nate. Don't complain about it to us if you don't like the game. That's your problem. Just trade it in and get something else. =/
