Hey, those are all some great characters! I kinda figured you would like Clive. He is the best character for the Double Beat rune after all. ^_~

Here are some of my favorites from the games you didnt mention.

In Suikoden 3 Juan was the character that I probably abused the most. He could dish out more damage then any of my true runes. Most people over look him since he has the Waking Rune (which forces him to sleep at the start of every battle until he is attacked). But once you get the Yellow Scarf his untold potential shines through.

He probably has one of the highest averages for skill ranks with an S in both Heavy Damage and Continual Attack, not to mention an insanely high Swing and for some reason an A+ in fire magic (not sure why O_o ). But I wasn’t uncommon for him to dispatch most or all of the monsters in a battle before any other characters had their move.
Toss on a Drain and Killer rune and he is a self-healing-critical-master who hits at least 6 times per set and often has more then one set of attacks (if your opponent lives long enough).

My other favorite in S3 was Ayame, with the Shrike rune you could do double damage to any foe reguardless of range or line of attack. Not to mention you can reuse this rune as many times as you want per battle. It indicates an increased chance of missing, but I can honestly say she never missed with it.

In S5 Richard takes first prize with his insane sword-play. I would always leave him front center. He would almost always dodge or parry an enemy’s physical attack and then counter attack. A fast and skilled attacker, he almost always hit 2-3 times per attack. Toss on a few Eye Ball Rings and the ‘Super Counter Rune’ (I can’t remember the name, it’s the one that gives you 100% counter rate), and he will dodge almost everything, counter almost everything and drain any health he lost in the process. Richard Rules!

Much like Richard, George also rules the roost in S5, though he has a bit lower MagDef. Other then that, and being able to equip the Killer Rune, they are very similar. (I think Richard doges and parries more consistently though).

With the addition of Mag-Drain Runes in S5, just about any mage can get the job done. Though Zerarse and Levi were the favorites. In most cases you could wipe out the entire enemy party with a highlevel rune then gain your slot back by just attacking once... Crazy cheap. XD

Not too hard. As long as you're not reckless you'll be fine. Just be careful and make sure you're well prepared.

Not long. If you have a couple level 4 spells for both Ted and Hero, then you can end it just about as quickly as you can cast them.

...Just about... I really dont rememer this boss being hard, and I didnt do any special leveling before hand. Though its not a bad idea. Reinbach can help a lot with that on the ship. ^_^

I heard there is some special way to easily get to Lvl 99. I read it at gameFAQs. I'm gonna go check it out.
I think it was some special place to train or something.

Yep, thats on your ship with Reinbach (bottom level near the stairs, the bald guy with no shirt and a spear).

The trick is to use just Hero and Ted in each battle and unload with thier most powerful spells (the battles get progressivly harder so plan acordingly). Then, once you have reached a crazy high level with those two, add one other person to the group. Since the lowest leve character gets the bulk of the Exp the 3rd party member will reap the rewards of the battle (even though Ted and Hero are doing all the work). The trick then becomes just keeping that other person alive untill thier level is high enough.

The part that takes the longest is just getting Ted and Heros levels up. Once you do that, it will be a cake-walk with the rest. ;)

Well, if you are in a hurry you shouldnt really need to level up much (depending on where you are now). Level 50 is plenty. You could easily do this in a few hours.

Be level 50 *before* you start. The tower will net you a few more, but I wouldn't go into the final boss room (it's at the end of a freakishly tall tower) until everyone was at least level 60. Level 60 is like, the magic Suikoden level. In 1, 2, and 4, level 60 is just about as high as you can hit until it just gets rediculous to bother with it.

You know, I have been thinking a lot about Suikoden V lately. Not so much how fun it was, but its content at the price of that fun. Dont get me wrong, there are a lot of great elements to the game but I really feel like they went over-board on the fan-service. We all know Jeane to be one of these such characters. Scarcely dressed in Suikoden IV she seams to wear even less in Suikoden V (if at all possible) and get some pretty flattering screen time... There are also two other Semi-Main characteres who have less clevage hidden then not...

Now while Suikoden II might have some of the same jokes and characters who are supposed to be seductive, it lacks the graphics to give these instances any real visual stumbling blocks.

These issues aside I think I would still vote Suikoden II higher then Suikoden V. Rather then simply scavanging for SoD, S2 provides much more depth and story to each characters recruitment. Not to mention the fact that the window to obtain some characters is so small that you will undoubtably have to play the game more then once to get them. Most people play the game again anyway just to get though Clives Quest (a very demanding quest that can require you to skip story and SoD to complete), which its self is worth the game.

In terms of favorite characters for the two games I played:

S3: I tended to stick with all three central characters even after the plots converge. Other then that, I used Emily, Viki, Sharon, Futch, his dragon, Sgt, Joe, and various other characters in Chris' knights/Geddoe's squad. I liked Thomas and Cecille as characters but never really used them past their chapters.
I probably used others but I can't remember.

SV:The Prince...
Lyon and Miakis both double as great healers/mages and fighters.
Belcoot and Richard were my two front line guys. I got them to the point where they were basically blocking or countering everything.
Zerase is ...too good not to use...as a mage. Her Star rune is quite powerful. For a distance-attacker, I liked Cathari. She's easily missable but her speed is quite an asset. Also liked Killey and Hazuki although I didn't really use them until the final dungeon.
Georg was good, although his magic defense is quite weak.

For a distance-attacker, I liked Cathari. She's easily missable but her speed is quite an asset.
Heck Yeah! Once I recruited Cathari she was in my party untill the final battle. Her attack was easily the highest in the game, making her extremely powerful at ranged combat, but despite her speed, she never attacked more then once in a set. I tend to lean toward fast characters with multiple hits and a draining ability more then rocks who dish out one attack at a time.

Anyway, I tended to play Cathari through most normal battles. I tossed her in the back row and loaded her up with the double-beat rune (or the insane rune) and the killer rune (or any combanation of those 3) and let her loose. She would easily do over 1000 dammage per shot (with out critical hits) but if the oponents used long range magic and lasted more then 2 rounds, she was done for. Yeah, I know, this was because the double-beat killed her defense, but for her 'out-of-battle-speed' and the ability to wipe out most oponents in one round, it was all worth it. ^_^

Yeah, you waited too long. Ted's appearance happens before the 'grace point' (that point where there's nothing left to do except go kill the boss). Taken from gamefaqs.com:

Tenkan Star - Ted
- From getting back Razril to getting back Kingdom of Ober period, when the
amount of allies meets the number(70?), head to the Strategy Room to triggers
the Misty Ship event. Ted will join in the end of this event. This whole thing
can be done as soon as you got back Razril

So, you have to do the Mist Ship event right after you recapture Razril and before you retake Obel. I can't blame them for making this have a restricted time period because Ted is just that good. You could feasably beat the game without him. First time through the game I didn't have him either; I just played through to familiarize myself with it.

How many characters should be at level 50?
For the last boss can I use backup parties even though I'm not on a ship?

For the last bit of the game, you'll need at least 8. You could probably do with a couple of level 40-45 characters, but a majority of characters in each party should be higher than that. And no, there aren't backup parties.

Tom Dincht just came up with a stradegy that saved his butt.
Thanks to the dungeon near the Obel palace ALL of my characters are LV.50+ with maxed out weapons. I might be able to beat this.

I was wrong.

This boss is INSANE. Is there any way to stop the move when he charges up that giant sphere because I only survive 5 turns and I inevitably die, because that does 500 damage to everyone and the most hp I have is 460 in a character.
Plus, I used my most jacked characters for when I had to fight Cray and they won't le me use those characters.

It sounds like you need to swap your characters around. Your BEST characters should be facing the fanal boss. Also, thats to bad about Ted, he really does the job better then anyone else. With out the Soul Eater rune, it will take longer to do the same ammount of dammage, so Im not completely sure what to do.

By this point in the game, I was kinda just ready to end it so I just used my most stacked characters for everything. ^_^

Im not exactly sure about your other options are here. But Im sure there are some. Sorry.

I don't really know what to tell you either. I mean, I wouldn't have put my best to fight Cray, personally. Wish I knew what to tell you... sorry. I guess.... just keep fighting to level up until your characters can survive that attack. Like I said, everyone should be at least level 60.

I think the Monther Earth Rune has that Canopy Defense spell. If that sphere thing is a magic attack, then this spell should negate the damage once. You just have to time it so its the next attack after your cast the spell.

Canopy Defense is a level 4 spell though, so you will want a powerful magic user to bear this rune in order to use it.

Yeah, that's an option. I think teh Flowing Rune might still have the Silent Lake spell, which seals magic for everyone. You might try that, too.

I find that Silent Lake rarely seams to work on oponents and always on my own characters. I think this spell is actually based on Rune spells. Any unique magic (such as that weilded by some monters and bosses) doesnt count...

Im not sure. Perhaps there are also some bosses that are just immune to this spell. At any rate. In a battle where Runes are going to do the bulk of your dammage (and be your effective source for healing) you probably dont want to negate them.

You can do it, I just find it less valuable in practice then concept.

Anyways, I'm probably going to pick up Suikoden III tomarrow which is the ONLY copy of any Suikoden game in a stock at EB located in Massachusetts.

This may seem like a spammy post, but i think it would sound cooler if it was pronounced "Suidoken". Anyways, everdread12a, can you please report the faults of Suikoden III once more since I'm soon to purchase it (maybe).

Ok. Keep in mind, I only played through about half of the game.

First - I don't like the trinity sight system. To tell the story properly requires too much story jumping, IMO.
Second - I found the battle system to be rather nonsensical. I didn't really see too much rhyme or reason to why they made it that way, and after playing through both S1 and S2 before hand, the system was largely unimpressive.
Third - I hate Chris. Play the game and find out why ^^
Fourth - No voices. Not even bad ones.
Fifth - The major combat system sucked. Plain and simple. They could have left it as a tactical style system, but no. They changed it.
I guess all in all, the reason why I didn't like this game is because it didn't feel like a Suikoden game. It's like comparing FF-X2 to any other FF game (except Mystic Quest). They're just not the same.
