Gaming's Top Publishers

Postby MasterDias » Mon Oct 04, 2004 12:11 pm

http://cube.ign.com/articles/553/553048p1.html

IGN recently posted the results of a study by a Game Developer Magazine where they listed the top 20 game publishers of 2004 (in their opinion.)

The "results" were:
1. Electronic Arts
2. Microsoft Game Studios
3. Sony Computer Entertainment
4. THQ
5. Ubisoft
6. Eidos
7. Activision
8. Take-Two
9. Atari
10. Nintendo
11. Vivendi
12. Codemasters
13. Acclaim
14. SEGA
15. Konami
16. Square Enix
17. Midway Games
18. Koei
19. Empire Interactive
20. Namco

I understand several factors went into creating this list.
But I don't much agree with this at all. Square Enix and Nintendo are behind companies like Atari... Capcom is not even on the list... and Acclaim shouldn't be on there. Acclaim is bankrupt. :eyebrow:
I wouldn't want them publishing any game of mine.

Comments or thoughts, anyone?

So, was this the top game producers, or the producers of Top rated games?

I dont care much if they pump out ton's of games if only a hand full of them are worth checking out... Just curious.

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

*Cracks knuckles* Time to rip this list to bits and mock their opinion... ^_-

The top Publishers, eh?

A few are just filler, should be a top ten.

Well, first of who should not be on the list is....

1. Acclaim = Yes, Acclaim is dead and gone. It's sad to see a company go, but this doesn't mean it should be on a top ten list. They died for a reason. Haha, in fact, one of their best series, Burn Out, was bought by EA before they died out. Not mention, is now one of the best racing games this year, if not the best.

And how can I forget their marketing schemes...

Anybody recall these marketing attempts by Acclaim?

1. Burn Out 2 - To celebrate the release of the game, Acclaim offered to refund the fines of any driver caught by cop cameras.
2. Turok Evolution - To celebrate the release of this poor game, Acclaim offered to buy the rights to legally rename five gamers "Turok" for an entire year.
3. BMX XXX - This by itself is an immortal embarrassment to the gaming world.
4. There was the decision to offer to pay for the funerals of the recently deceased in return for the right to place a small billboard on the headstone advertising Shadowman 2.

O'yeah, and remember the story of Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen are suing Acclaim?

So, they were rank 13, eh? Times that by 5 to get my rank for them.

Who's next?

2. Atari
= Sure, they've done a fair job making little games for kids, but that's all I can think off hand that's very recent. The rest of their most recent games are well.. meh.

3. Codemaster = HAHAHAHAHAHA! *breaths* Ahaha ahhhh... ha. That's funny. *wipes tear from eye* Ok, they have released some good games this year.... but, only three... but, nothing to take real praise notice too. I think the good ones were Operation: Flashpoint, a rally racing game, and Second Sight.

So, maybe they released a bunch of GBA games to get on this list? Nope, only one... American Idol.. yes, American Idol on the GBA... a game about singing and where the only fun is listening to Simon's comments and now…. on the GBA, a system not made for voice sound.

Anyways... next publisher that should not be here...

4. Empire Interactive: I'm expecting to hear April fool now, folks... Starsky & Hutch and Ford racer of some games they’ve put their name on. Yet, I will say, Ghostmaster is a very fun game.

5. Midway = I've never liked Midway and that’s not changing soon.

My list:

1. Electronic Arts
2. Nintendo
3. Microsoft Game Studios
4. Lucasarts
5. Ubisoft
6. Konami
7. Square Enix
8. SEGA
9. Sony Computer Entertainment
10. Vivendi
11. Activision
12. Namco
13. Koei
14. Eidos
