Game of the Year (2008)

I'm not in the mood for some big argument, but in your opinion, what is your favorite game of 2008? and Why?

I'd have to say that Gears 2 and No More Heroes are fighting for the top spot.
I love the semi-strategic action og GOW2, but I also love the over the top violence of NMH so I think it ends in a tie.

TWEWY, owing to the fact that the DS is the only thing I own that can play modern games. But, TWEWY's also the game that I've spent the most time in this year, other than WoW (which I quit in April, so that takes WotLK out of the competition for me). Everything about it is solid: the combat system, the story, the art, the music. Everything about it is well thought out, right down to the last detail. And best of all, it's something completely original and out from left field from Square Enix, that bastion of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest remakes. It definitely put them back on the map for me.

Though that isn't really fair, as it's my favorite game of all time. I'd have to say No More Heroes was my GotY, followed by Fallout 3.

No More Heroes was fantastic in so many ways. It had a near arcade like addictive quality, while still maintaining an insane spoof story that still managed to pack an emotional punch. The boss battles are some of the most fun I have ever had in a video game, yet were still very challenging. Every time I beat a boss made me think, "That's what boss fights should be like in every game."

Fallout 3 for the obvious reasons.

Hmmmmm, this is a very inntresting subject.

I consider MGS4 to be sort of a interactive movie..... A very fine interactive movie I should add. Of course it got all the game elements too it, however the story/cutscenes are of better quality than the gameplay itself, although I do like the gameplay.

Now, I had most fun with No More Heros. Problem is that it is short lasted, which is a shame. I have not had so much fun since Zelda OOT, the only difference is that Zelda OOT was a much, much longer experiense thus had more value.

The best game in terms of how much care was taken into makeing it is a race beetwen MGS4 and Dead Space, however the chips land at Dead Space's side of the table this time. Incredible game, might feel monotone to some, but sure had alot of volume to me. Partly because of the fear that generates this sorta volume though.

Gears 2 is fun, but in sort of a way that's all it is. The story is bland, but the action is fun and absorbs your inntrest. I like the style of the game, it's dirty, destructive and in some ways horrible, but it knows it is.

Of the games that I actually have experience with Gears 2 probably ranks the highest on my list. The action is fantastic and just absolutely non-stop and it was definitely an evolutionary improvement over it's predecessor in pretty much every way possible. It succeeded in pretty much every way a game can succeed for me except in having a moving storyline. The story was interesting, but I wouldn't exactly say it was moving.
Coming in a solid second place would be Braid. This wins out in having both an iteresting story and probably the most mind blowing game mechanics I have ever played with. Additionally the game is just so beautiful! Every single pixel is worked out to look like a part of a painting.
Of course, those'r the only new games I could vote for game of the year. I played and beat tons of old games that would have kicked butt in their respective years had you asked me then.

Concerning Gears 2, I think that the one part with Dom (you know what im talking about) made the entire story interesting. I almost cried during that scene, but besides that the story sort of ollows this: "go underground into the hive for..." (x5)

I'd say Metal Gear Solid 4. It brought everything to a nice close and was just presented very nicely.

Ah, Warhammer. I guess it gets my vote, then, by being the only game of 2008 I've actually played.

I did almost as well, but... Not really quite enough. I don't think they did enough with that entire portion of the plot for that scene to have paid off as well as it could have.

compare that to the rest of the game. I think that it shows that not everyone fighting is an emotionless, testosterone, pumped bullet sponge.

Ironman. Was. Pure. Awesomeness. It got a little frustrating at times when played on the PSP but w/e it was cool. A bunch of different suits. You can use any of them on any level which was cool. I Liked it.

For me it's a four-way battle between Left 4 Dead, No More Heroes, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Fallout 3.

TWEWY and No More Heroes = Win.

But I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 or SSBB. Seriously. Those two games, TWEWY and NMH are all fighting for the top spot in my book.

TC: UTK 2 has the usual surgery action, but the game is a great improvement on the original. And SSBB is obvious: I (usually Kirby) can knock Snake off a cliff!
Then, TWEWY has the best combat system on the DS and a good storyline, and NMH is just plain awesome. I mean, everything in Santa Destroy's named after wrestling holds, and the over-the-top violence is totally awesome.

I totally agree. I played Fallout 3 but I think that is totally overrated and TWEWTY deserves the top spot. It is probably my favorite handheld game ever and I can only hope for a sequel.

I'm gonna have to break the mold here and give some indie-love to World of Goo. That game was sheer brilliance, not only in its physics, but in its bizarre and compelling sense of mood and style. It's no "big" or "epic" game but what it does, it does perfect. Truly a little masterpiece in my book.
