Family issues...

Postby Slater » Thu Oct 14, 2004 9:35 pm

I have been split from my family because of certain realizations we had... in the spiritual realm. I'm a calvinist and they are arminian. Now I know that probably a lot of you don't know what in the world those two mean, but let's put it this way: right now it means that we are pretty much opposite poles as far as Christianity is concerned...

We just need prayer for family unity in this... the battles between calvinists and arminians has been going on for a looong time now with no show of ever reaching any middle ground, and I doubt that will happen in my family.

ah... I guess you could call them the most general denominations in which 98% of Christians chose to be on one side or the other.
Calvinists believe in what we call TULIP, where as Arminians believe in quite different things... pretty much exact opposite...
These things in a nutshell are

Total depravity of man
Unconditional Election
Limited Atonement (dad and me got in a number of debates over this one tonight)
Irresistable Grace
Perserverance of the Saints

ah... well I just checked the above site out and it seems to not be written by a calvinist... I would do something like that... ^^; still it gives the basic points on calvinism, as does http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/dabney/5points.htm

also you can google for more, clearer info if you want... I am sure that there is tons out there.

Yeah, I've read a lot of history behind both Calvinists and Arminians and I'm sure it's pretty tough when you aren't in agreement with your family!

I will keep you in my prayers! Is it just you against everyone? Stick in there and don't lose hope! Keep your eyes on Jesus.
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone
And so hold on when there is nothing left in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' ...you'll be a Man, my son!

I didn't know what Arminian was so i used Dictionary.com
Arminian Of or relating to the theology of Jacobus Arminius and his followers, who rejected the Calvinist doctrines of predestination and election and who believed that human free will is compatible with God's sovereignty.

Sorry to hear about that. I will pray that your family bonds can be restored. Because family are one of the most precious things we have. I hope one day y'all will be able to eye-to-eye and meet in the middle. I'll be praying.

yeah... I mean, I can't see why they wouldn't be calvinist after being Christian so long... Calvinists and Arminians are both Christians, yes, but the Arminians seem to take away from the personalism (is that a word?) between God and us His children...

*hugs you all* Thank you for your prayer!
